Top 3 worst plays in UT history

The worst for me; because I was there; was the missed FG at Jordan Hare with 36 seconds to go in 1990.

The David Palmer 2 point conversion was in 1993. It happened right in front of me.

Well, while everyone is whipping out record books while discussing UT/Bama games of past, remember the result of the game, while painfully ending in a 17-17 tie, is actually reflected as a UT win and a Bama loss. They forfeited all the games that season due to NCAA penalties.

One of the hazards of having a rival that constantly runs afoul of the NCAA rulebook is that the result on the field is not necessarily the final result of the game...

Does the record book make you forget a blown opportunity to get the first on-field win over Bama in 8 years?

1.) Crompton gets his 1st snap
2.) G gun (other than when it went for 70)
3.) Wild Berry

1) The Cory Anderson fumble. Just knew we were scoring and to this day don't know how he did that.

2) David Palmer...nuff said

3) Blocked FG against Bama. Can't remember what year, late 80s-early 90s? The effing ball bounces half way down the damn field from the blocked kick setting them up for a FG.

I know there are more, but I hate Bama so bad that these literally destroyed my psyche for a few days.

Honerable mention:

1) The squib kick that set UGA up for the Hob Nailed Boot drive. Why did we squib kick and give it to them on the 40?

2) 13 on the field at LSU. I wasn't gonna mention it because I've tried to erase the Dooley era from my mind. Dude reigned 3 years of terror on the Vol Nation.

3) James "Little Man" Stewart's fumbles against Bama.

Deon Grant jumping 60 inches in the air, levitating for three seconds, keeping alive our NC hopes, and blocking the... oh wait, wrong thread.

Well, worst play TN was involved with: Ill stick to that game and give the award to Clint Stoerner. Go Vols

Let me just say I hate these worst "ever" threads. I mean, Tennessee had a 33 game win streak end in 1930. Certainly one of the plays in that game would be considered worse than 12 men on the field from a meaningless season, right?

Lets just leave it at worst "in the history of my memory" and leave it at that!

I like your positive energy. However, that was a 33-game streak without a loss; there were ties in 1927 (Vanderbilt), 1928 (Kentucky), and 1929 (Kentucky). See Tennessee Historical Scores. This thread, on the other hand, provides incontrovertible evidence that there is a strong underlying thread of negativity on this board. More than twice as many posts have been contributed to this thread as the one pertaining to top three, most positively memorable plays in UT football history. That, quite frankly, is sad.

I got the idea to start the thread form reading the top 3 best plays thread. Never thought it would take off like this. However, I do think it is somewhat cathartic to get it of our system now and then start fresh for the 2013 season. Obviously, I was not around and do not remember plays from the 1920's and 30's, so I believe it was understood that it was plays that we could actually remember from our lieftimes. I certianly welcome anyone who has a memory of a bad play from the 50's or 60's they would like to share.

It is amazing his many people are mad at plays that didn't happen.

I have seen incorrect bowl games, the wrong guys accused of fumbling, and others.

I can't just say 3. I'm sorry OP.

1. The blocked kick in 1990 vs Alabama.

2. David Palmer 2pt conversion.

3. Any play vs Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl and Citrus Bowl.

4. Chuck Webb tearing up his knee vs. Pacific.

5. Any play of the Dooley era.

6. Hobnail boot

7. Jamal Lewis 4th down toss sweep vs Fla

8. Ice Man unable to take snaps in the rain.

9. Heath Shuler going pro after 1993 season.

10. Memphis effing State.

There are dozens more.. its just too depressing to keep typing.

Way to over think it. Negative thoughts stay with you more than positive ones. The losses hurt more than the wins feel good. It is just natural to remember the wounds more vividly.

No they don't. In 45 years of fandom, I have far more positive memories of Tennessee football than negative ones. We are simply mired in the most protracted down period since the late Battle-early Majors era.

The squibb kick that set up the Hobnail Boot was terrible.

Ever since we gave George Cafeco that used van as a going away present, our karma on special teams has been awful.

Right...

The record book that gives UT the win also lists the final score.

The blown opportunity was an Alabama football team playing a player that was ineligible in a 8-2-1 season that caused them to forfeit every win or tie from that season. And they still had the arrogance to insist that they did nothing wrong and that the NCAA was overreaching and being unreasonable.

That's what I call a blown opportunity.

Overreact much? Nobody said we have more negative memories than positive ones. I said that the bad ones are easier to recall because they stick around longer.

I understand, and I am nitpicking somewhat. But when asking people to arbitrarily pick the worst plays in the history of Tennessee football, that's a lot of history and I don't think the question can property be answered.

Other than a couple of references to games form the 60's and 80's, I think the better question would have been "Top 3 worst plays since Tennessee's 1998 championship season." And really, that would best define where this fan base is today.

Still have a Gator Bowl win from that year. We're also still considered the SEC West champions.
