We were having this discussion at work. Assuming Peyton wins another SB, I think it will be hard not to put him at the top. Here's my list RIGHT NOW:

1. Favre
2. Unitas
3. Manning
4. Montana
5. Marino

Also considered: Elway, Bradshaw, Brady, Moon, Tarkenton, etc.

Thoughts?

No ring, no top five. Sorry Marino. Although I thought he was great (caught the tail end of his career). Most people would not give you a look without the ring.

Why can Favre be first with only 1 ring then? Favre is the most overrated QB of all time IMO. He threw over 300 interceptions in his career.

You lost me at Favre.

I hope this is sarcasm. Dan Marino is one of the best QBs I've ever seen. Does this apply to other positions as well. I'm pretty sure Barry Sanders never won a SB. Would most people not give him a look? If so, most people are morons.

People have played on better teams than Peyton Manning. But no one has really played the quarterback position better than Peyton Manning. Not in a single season. And not over the length of their career.

Wow - no Favre at all!?!

Agree with you BTW that Brees is tremendously underrated.

If I were to go through the top ten, he'd make it. He's not top five though. I really think I could convince myself to make this top five in any order I pleased and consider it to be an accurate top 5, especially if Manning wins again in two weeks.

Not really my view on it. I actually don't "rank" all time at any position. I am relatively young, I missed out on a good chunk of people's careers, so my opinion doesnt bare any weight. Also, I don't think judging people solely based on stats is fair, so I cant rank. I was simply, and partially sarcastically passing along the argument I often here from radio hosts.

And to your last point, I think most people only put rings on the shoulder of the QB, whether that is fair or not, is up to the individual. Me personally, I don't think it's fair.

Why is one ring enough for Favre to get the top spot, but Manning needs two?

Favre: TDs: 508, INTs: 336, Yards: 71,838, QBR: 86.0

Manning: TDs: 491, INTs: 219, Yards: 64,964, QBR: 97.2.

Favre has more TDs and yards and they have same number of SBs. Favre also more INTs and less QBR than Manning. Like I said that was my current rating. If Manning wins SB this year and comes back next year, I think he will go down as greatest ever.

Of the QB's I've personally watched, if I could take anyone to lead my team, Manning, Marino and Montana would be my Top 3.

Steve Young gets overlooked a lot too. If he had not gotten stuck behind Montana for a number of years I think he would be higher up in the discussion.

If Manning plays for 20 years, he'll obliterate those stats. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter...he's a better QB than Favre.

I really hate that people don't understand rings are PART of the equation, not THE equation.

One other thought...

which QBs contributed to the greatest WRs in NFL history?

If you look at it that way, you'd have to think:

1. Montana
2. Young
3. Manning

Let us not forget that nobody played through injury like Brett Favre. High-risk, high-reward is what made Brett Favre the epitome of greatness. Also, nobody mentored backups like Favre. 4 future starters (3 of which became quite successful) in the NFL mentored under Favre.
