Glory is a very good film; 12 Years as a Slave is pretty rough but a good film

Glory is one of the few non-comedy movies that If it's on when I'm flipping around, I'll watch to the end virtually every time.

It's hard to believe that movie over 25 years old now.

10 of my favorite historical films are(no necessarily in this order):

Spartacus
Waterloo
Patton
Zulu
All Quiet on the Western Front(1930 version)
Wyatt Earp
Tora,Tora,Tora
Midway
Hamburger Hill
King David

Zulu...with Michael Caine? One of the first grownup movies I remember watching as a kid. Loved that movie. I think I saw it on TBS late one night when I was about 9. Awesome movie that really captured the desperation of the Brits in that situation.

Agree, great flick.

I'm not a huge fan of the gore in current war movies, it seems more for shock value than storytelling.

Also add the 2 Cornelius Ryan based movies to my list, A Bridge Too Far coming in just ahead of The Longest Day

Gettysburg..We were soldiers once..Bridge over the river Kwai..Valkyrie..Flags of our fathers and letters from Iwo Jima..Midway..all quiet on the western front...edit: forgot my favorite..saving private ryan..first 20 minutes was one of the hardest things I have ever sat through...really brought home the awfulness of that day.

Have you watched the WW II in color documentary series from a few years ago ? Those marine films from Tarawa were awful..I cried like a baby watching that...not ashamed.

It's not necessarily a historical movie, but Band of Brothers is at the absolute top of my list.

A few other good history based movies that haven't been mentioned are The Patriot, Black Hawk Down and Schindler's List. Also, Gettysburg is a really good, historically accurate movie with the exception of the ridiculous fake beards.

Those were fake?..no way...jk
