Transfer Portal 22-23

Coulibaly will be a great addition to our team. She was 2nd team all SEC as a Sophomore and again as a Junior. The starting lineup of Key, Jillian, Rickea, Wells, and Coulibaly would be the most balanced offense we have had in eons, with all very capable of scoring double digit points on most nights. This lineup could potentially be good on defense as well.

Kellie, Coach Sam and TK are all following her on Instagram. Kellie doesn’t seem to follow many players unless she is very interested.
It is that kind of tough-nosed player that Kellie needs. Today's generation is so damn soft. When you find the tough ones, you need to do everything you can to get them. The players today aren't like those of the Pat Summitt years. Got to have some players that are relentless and have an edge.

I read an interesting article that explained the ins and outs of the NIL business side of things for athletes that have large social media pull. Basically these athletes have hired a professional management team/rep to help them brand themselves, increase their media footprint, attract sponsors and collect advertising/promotional deals. The athlete typically pays a % of their revenue from these deals to the company/rep doing this work.

Universities have also put together programs that are in place to facilitate and guide the athletes to opportunities both locally and nationally. In some cases, there are booster clubs or organizations separate from the university that raise funds which go into a pool and are distributed to athletes for appearances etc., like the situation at SC where each WBB player receives $25,000 per year.

For the top players, being in the right market or program that attracts more media attention and exposure is a significant factor in building their brand to its top potential obviously, and the firms hired to manage NIL for these players are certainly incorporating that into their business models when advising the athletes on their financial potential. The more the athlete makes, the more the management team makes. So that is all part of the equation these days, and it truly has a business aspect to it now that was not there previously.

As for HVL who was reported by the Louisville Courrier to be over $1 million now in annual NIL revenue, it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot, her profile in college is conducive to making life changing money. Who knows what becomes of her down the road in the WNBA.

"I've been very specific in what I'm looking to partner with, what I'm willing to put my image on,” Van Lith said in October.
In August 2021, she became the first college women's basketball player to sign with global PR agency Octagon, whose client list also includes Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry and Olympic gymnastics great Simone Biles.

Some players that are in the portal that can rebound which is what Coach Kellie said we were looking for are Barnum out of Arkansas, Morrow, Coulibaly, Jefferson, Micheeaux out of Minnesota. Camille Hobby is a Grad Transfer Center out of NC State. Still a lot of point guards in there Van Lith, Donarski, Mingo Young, Day Wilson out of Duke, Zyanna Walker out of Louisville, Pao Pao Oregon, Padilla out of Penn, Nivar out of Stanford, Hunter out of Texas, and Owusu out of Va Tech.

These are some of the better names didn't include Betts as looks like she already has a list of nine which we are not on.

Morrow and Coulibaly have to be the priority on that list. Not sure if we’re in on Morrow or not. I think she could be a North Carolina lean.

Barnum isn’t a player I think we should pursue. She’s had knee issues and that just makes me nervous. She did improve her numbers drastically this season, doubling her scoring and rebounding. Shoots the 3 but not at a very high rate. I feel like Puckett is just as good if you give her more shots and get her rebounding the ball.

The game or two Horston was out and Puckett got more shots she got in a rhythm and played well.

Yes! She’s a player I’d love to see in orange. Her game would complement Rickea’s really well. I actually think she has a tighter handle than JH.

She reminds me a lot of the Ogwumike’s - except she’s a few inches shorter. She’s not one of the big names in the portal, but would be a perfect fit for us, imo.

She’s a little like their younger sister, Erica, who had a great career at Rice. Erica was only 5’9” but averaged double digit points and rebounds as a senior. Super athletic and a high motor.

We were really tied up with sophomores on the roster this past season. Two have transferred and we still have six now that we signed Wells in that class. I think we'd like to get a couple players that were freshmen last year, but there does not seem to be many of them in the portal that would help that much. I know we've engaged with the Georgetown freshman Fauntleroy really not seeing that she is an upgrade over Miles maybe she has a huge upside that the coaches see. So it looks like we will continue to grow that junior class or take a couple of one year players. Really seems vital we sign some freshmen this next class to try and get these classes more evened out. We definitely need a heavy rebounder and Coulibaly, Morrow, Micheaux, and Jefferson fit that need.

Anyone know the scoop on Amauri Williams? Don’t know anything about her situation but as a freshman she would be a nice pickup. Timing if things seemed like it may have been academics, but that is sheer speculation.

She’s a nice player with good size.

Looks like Sam is also following Avery Strickland and her family is following her. I don’t really see the point of Avery if we have Sara and Tess. Signing her would mean no one else wanted to be a lady vol. I hope we don’t get desperate they didn’t even offer her in high school

I think that was from before. Strickland isn’t even in the portal unless Raoul has just accidentally not added her. Pretty sure her parent posts here and over shares. Not something our staff would like. Kellie has said they recruit parents as much as players these days and I can see why.

She's in the portal and she's open to staying at Pitt too.

So many guards on that list, esp point guards. We are settled out at PG. I want a true off guard who is a great defender and proven 3 pt shooter against elite competition. Can and will also rebound. Who on that list do I want?

Jefferson or Donarski would be that kind of player. I think the staff like Fontleroy as well.

Can’t separate the two lol. She’s the head coach. Kids are committing to her and the program, whether you like that or not.

Does Ole Miss have a board? Maybe you can get on over there and ride that Yo train you’re so in love with.
I mean, people done it to Holly.

When we were still recruiting well despite the product, it was “Tradition” and “Sharrona Reeves” and “Tennessee recruits itself.”

Are we still not using that?

Not something I’ve heard as much the last season or two. Unfortunately things fell so far under Holly that became a joke. And was pure lies.

Also felt like our recruiting wasn’t as great as everyone was saying. Seemed to me we were excellent at landing the overrated, over hyped prima donna players like Westbrook. (An eventual role player at UCONN for anyone who has forgotten her.)

Holly wasn’t developing them either. It was infuriating to watch. Kellie has done far more with far less and I enjoy the product on the floor again. It’s going to take getting back to the Final Four for our HS recruiting to really pickup again IMO. Until then I think we have proven we are one of the best homes for quality transfers in the NCAA.
