Transfer Portal Thread

Gonzaga is playing for the national championship as a low volume 3 point shooting team and one that runs through the post. So, I guess it does work.

I believe they also tried to run some dribble, drive concepts later in the year for Springer and Johnson. Calipari is the one that made that more known bringing it from Memphis. He will still use it some based on his personnel.

They have a top 5 player in the country in Timme and a top 5 NBA draft pick in Suggs. Pretty much any offense looks good with that personnel. Grant, Admiral, and Bone made our offensive scheme look great too. Without Grant Williams, the numbers aren't very kind.

Well, sure. I am not sure how that really helps your argument. I have always said that we don't need a dominant post but certainly need an inside presence with better shooters. We lost that with Fulky being worse than the year before.

A national title team needs elite players regardless. My point was that this Gonzaga team is winning without using analytics to jack up a bunch of three's.

He's a PG prospect and we have an elite PG coming in already, so I don't see the fit, but this is big news so felt like I should post anyway.

That’s shocking to hear.

What a wild off-season already.

After a poster started talking about "other teams" getting good transfers with talent already on the roster, I read a couple of articles about Kentucky. Based on those, this isn't surprising. They apparently did not view Askew as the PG of the future. They are looking for a transfer PG, and the incoming Hickman may not be ready yet.

You aren't sure how it helps my argument? The issue with our offense is that apparently it needs an elite offensive player or it isn't very good. We haven't ranked in the top 70 in terms of offensive efficiency without Grant Williams at his SEC player of the year levels. That's alarming and speaks to a scheme issue because we aren't a program that is going to churn out first team All-Americans with regularity.

You don't need first team All-Americans, but it certainly helps to have all conference players. You won't have a good program without having good players. Crazy that Gonzaga is good with elite players, and Baylor is good with two all conference first team players. Alabama had the player of the year and two others on all conference teams. Kind of how that works.

So you see zero issue in us not being able to achieve an offense in the top 70 without Grant Williams? If that is your stance, cool. No need to go any further.

You are going off on a tangent anyway. You originally said "old" offense. Just because it hasn't been great doesn't mean that it's old. That's why Gonzaga is proving that incorrect.

But, that's ok. Maybe criticize how Barnes walks next time. Seems to be your thing.

It is old. It is outdated. There have been numerous articles on this very topic. Which is part of the reason it hasn't been very good outside of having an elite player. Which again, an elite player will make any offense look good.

Gonzaga's offense uses way more pick and rolls with significantly better spacing among other things. Their mid range attempts (which we seem to love) ranked 348th in the country. They were 1st in shots around the rim. Their use of a post player (or 2) doesn't make it old.

Just curious....what articles? Specific to UT? I agree that Gonzaga uses more pick and roll, but I think the "outdated" argument is an easy out. It's shown to be fine with the right players. We need a better post presence, and the team wasn't consistent enough shooting from outside. Of course better players help though. Grant Williams wasn't a high level recruit, and good coaching made him a great player.

Yes specific to UT. They have been posted on here and referenced a few times. I think someone even posted video breakdown with commentary. Feel free to search on here for it.

Here is an article from 2011 and his Texas days. It's the same offense he runs today!!! Basketball has changed a lot over the last decade, yet here we are running the virtually the same offense. That in itself should render it outdated.

Understanding Rick Barnes' Texas Basketball Offense: The Flex

The offense has shown to be outside the top 70 unless it has the SEC player of the year on the roster. That isn't "fine".

It wasn't just Grant. Bone, Bowden, and Admiral made that offense go, too.

The video below has examples but also for anyone wanting to reminisce about the 2019 team. Just haven't had these types of players the last two years...with experience, but I would have loved to see the 2020 version of Fulky this year with Springer and Johnson. I believe we also incorporated some dribble, drive concepts to try to help them this year. Never going to say it is perfect, but I just don't agree that it totally needs to be scrapped. I will be interested to see if Chandler can bring what Bone did.
