This is kind of what I’m referring to. When they hired Smart everybody labeled him as “The guy” at the time. I do believe Beard is a better fit than Smart though. Not saying Beard won't turn out to be the right man for the job, but Shaka Smart was a botched hire? I remember him being the hot ticket when they hired him.

The masses of idiots may have labeled Smart as the guy. He is a gimmick coach nothing more. Beard won big at Texas Tech and will kill it at Texas.
That's all I'm saying... Smart was considered a home run hire by everyone at the time. Sure, he wasn't the guy, but hindsight is 20/20, and the AD brought in the guy everyone wanted. Perhaps Smart botched his opportunity, but the AD didn't botch the hire. Beard isn't a botched hire either, but like Smart there's no guarantee he'll be successful, even if it seems so at the moment. There were no masses of idiots. Smart was sought after by many schools for a couple of years and simply turned them all down until Texas. No way can you say he was a botched hire. You can say that Beard is better and a great hire, but that doesn’t change the above.
Smart is about to have the 4th player from Texas drafted in the first round in 4 different years. It’s not like he recruited poorly- just couldn’t win enough. I guess Texas isn’t so easy after all.
Shaka Smart was the basketball equivalent of Tom Herman in football. Texas, and the majority of the nation, believed they hired the hottest two names going at the time. Neither guy panned out, but both were highly desirable. That's all I'm saying... Smart was considered a home run hire by everyone at the time. What makes you say Tennessee has fixed that problem?I think Texas has been a lot like Tennessee with a toxic culture in the Athletic Department. It is beginning to look like Tennessee may have finally fixed that problem. I have no idea about Texas, but I think it will be hard for anyone to win there, longterm, until that situation is fixed.
I keep hearing people say that Texas has a toxic culture. Where is that coming from? There are plenty of toxic cultures in college Athletics... LSU, Baylor, etc... but Texas? Tennessee isn’t even toxic but we are in worse shape than Texas. We have idiots all the way up to the board who can’t identify talent, let alone know how to attract it. And thats if they even care about athletic success which I’m not entire convinced of.I think Texas has been a lot like Tennessee with a toxic culture in the Athletic Department. It sounds like Texas boosters have a ton of input on most of their big decisions. Don’t know if that’s considered toxic, but it’s definitely affected them getting results on the field. They have arguably the #1 college fan base and haven’t been a consistent elite program in a while.I keep hearing people say that Texas has a toxic culture. Where is that coming from? I guess if it puts things in perspective, we wanted Charlie Strong but bungled it, and they hired him. Just like Shaka, they’ve been able to hire some hot rising names in the coaching ranks, they just didn’t pan out. We haven’t even been able to manage the former. It sounds like Texas boosters have a ton of input on most of their big decisions. It really is all about "The Eyes of Texas" situation. You can look that up, but the boosters have a tremendous amount of influence.I keep hearing people say that Texas has a toxic culture. Smart’s failure has everything to do with Texas, and very little to do with Smart. Smart isn’t gimmicky. He’s just a smart, young, successful, independent black man. Texas isn’t evolved enough for that equation. I predict he’ll return to being successful at Marquette. Great example story: Two weeks of practice into year one Smart was asked to “consider” abandoning pressure D (his core philosophy).
A week later he was informed that the boosters and AD knew the conference, and they didn’t want “wild” defense because it wouldn’t work. He was given “notes” from boosters after every game. The AD visited practice, and talked directly to players about their play. The AD had private meetings with assistants to express their dissatisfaction. That place is a run by a bunch of white haired halfwits that equate their accidental oil wealth with intelligence. Supposedly Beard will have full authority. He didn’t leave 5mm a year to collaborate with a bunch of low grade Jerry Jones clones. Beard is a no-compromise tough coach who comes from the Bobby Knight tree. He’s an alum, he’s not scary to old white guys, and he’s a top five coach in getting return on talent. I’ll be surprised if Texas isn’t a regular contender almost immediately. I’ll be more surprised if Shaka fails at Marquette. He’s a very good coach.
Everyone thought Shaka was going to win big there too. I have no doubt Beard will have teams at Texas that are capable of winning it all, but this is IMO the hardest championship to win in American sports. A lot has to break your way to actually cut a net down even if you think you have the perfect team.Agree on Beard. He will win a championship there.
