Wanted to be Bobby Knight, Junior, imo. Didn't work, recruiting-wise without the NC resume, 3-pointer and TBA killed himDevoe was fun in 1978-79. Peaked too soon. But the Tony White/Fred Jenkins was a fun brand. And Tyrone Beaman/Michael Brooks.
Don certainly was too stubborn for his own good. Too much on court discipline was demanded as the 1980s rolled on. Hurt his recruiting.
Is college basketball a tournament sport or a regular season sport? Does anyone remember Which teams beat which teams in the regular season or do they remember who beats who in the Final 4 and championship game?Good lord...where to start.
A.) You aren't Barnes's boss, so your parallel here doesn't hold water.
B.) You've never believed Rick Barnes has earned his salary, whether he made $2 million, $3.5 million, or $5 million. You've always believed he was overpaid, even during his best Tennessee moments, because the only success you are willing to recognize is NCAAT performance. The process of the regular season receives no praise or recognition from you, yet you're the first in line to bellyache after each and every regular season loss.
It. Can't. Be. Both.
Either give credit when he wins big regular season games, or shut the heck up when he loses one. Your hypocrisy earns your opinion no respect because you're incapable of objectivity.
C.) Claim all you want that you like Rick Barnes as a person, but no one believes for a second that you like him, even a little bit, as a coach. Your post history and rationale is all the proof anyone needs.
I'm fine in criticizing Barnes when he deserves it, and I've done my fair share of it. You just have your mind made up on him and have since the day he was hired, believing he approached this job as some golden parachute into retirement. You'll excuse away any success he attains and overstate any failure. If that can't be perceived as you "not liking him", then you need to review the meaning of that phrase.
Going back to your flimsy analogy, I certainly hope your boss is more fair in your annual performance review than you are with regards to Barnes.
You make a great point and I do enjoy the regular season games with hope that RB has our team peaking at the right time each yearBarnes has not had postseason success equal to what he has accomplished during the regular season over his career. hard to argue that. Most of us can still enjoy a successful regular season and appreciate that Barnes has taken UT basketball to a higher level then where we have historically been. If all you care about is the post season I suggest ignoring what happens until March. I will enjoy our regular season schedule and successes and hope we get over the hump in March. To consistently harp on Barnes post season record this early in the season makes it seem like you are just hateful and can't sit back and enjoy good basketball when you see it. Go Vols.
When would you consider him ever being underpaid? He’s always been paid well at UT. It’s just that once he flirted with UCLA to get $5M + from us, he should expect the expectations to increase as wellPrior to him being paid Top 5 money were you on this board claiming he was underpaid? Saying that he was over coaching expectations set by his salary? If not, then using the salary now is pretty weak.
I'm done. You aren't intelligent enough to logically argue any BS point that you jump back and forth across. You just pick one issue, get challenged, and then move to another. Not worth the effort. Is college basketball a tournament sport or a regular season sport? Absolutely not. The standard is the standard and the expectations are the expectations. Salary has nothing to do with it at all. When would you consider him ever being underpaid? Bingo
Mears was UT's coach for fifteen years. He went to 3 NCAA tourneys and if I recall correctly never won an NCAA tournament game. He had a 71% win rate overall. It's true that you had to be a conference winner in those days to get into the tourney. Still, he never won anything on the few times he got in. If winning in March is your criteria, why would you put Mears ahead of Barnes?
Pearl's UT record: 6 years, 70% win record overall, NCAA tourney all six years with 2 SS, and one EE. Not bad. Better than Barnes 6 years, overall. But then he screwed the pooch, didn't he?
He took over a dumpster fire at Tennessee. He took over a program that had been the the NCAAT 4 of 5 years at Texas. His record at Tennessee is skewed by his first two years as he built the foundation. Minus those two years, he's 70.9% at Tennessee across 4 seasons and the first four games of this season. For anyone else who’s curious, Barnes’s win record at Tennessee has been 63%. He was 69.1% at Texas.

I’m not arguing. I’m just stating the fact that a coach that is one of the top 5 paid coaches in the country should have one of the top performing teams in the country come tournament time.I'm done. Ok whatever, he HASN‘T met expectations in March, at least yet. Still holding out hope for this years tourney in what should be his best backcourt ever and we all know teams with good guard play typically do better in the tourneyAbsolutely not. The standard is the standard and the expectations are the expectations. Salary has nothing to do with it at all.
You want to argue that he hasn't met expectations in March, we can have that discussion. But I expect Tennessee to compete at a certain level whether the coach makes $1M a year or $10M a year.

You pretty much said it right here. It is not the same when you basically start out playing a top 8 team. Kinda hard to get a rhythm going. It's simply comparing apples to oranges.
Sure, Mears' teams choked a bit, but it's just not the same as starting with what would have been cupcakes for them, and building up team confidence, etc.
King sat out with an injury.
Even after the field expanded to 24 and 32, the teams were not seeded.
The NIT was a de facto first/second round. It was actually a celebrated accomplishment to be invited to the NIT.
Winning the conference was more important. The NCAAT was more like a holiday tournament or a minor bowl game. Early round games (when there were only about 15 or 23 or 31 total instead of 67) were played in the afternoon and usually weren’t even televised until the semis.
You do realize we had AD’s that couldnt have cared less about men’s BB during those “ down” years. Barnes has been refreshing for sure , has been provided the resources to excel and has recruited well enough to get us back in contention like we were under Mears and Pearl. As I will continue to say, now he needs to prove he can coach come tournament time.TN went to ONE NCAAT between 1984 and 1997. 1 of 14. Houston, O’Neil, Buzz, and Tyndall were zero for 13. Include Cuonzo and it is once in 16 years. Barnes has been to the last 3 NCAATs and should extend that to at least 5 and probably more as long as he keeps stuffing the roster with great players. Less than 20% of eligible teams even make the tournament.
Your dumb posts overflow with delusions of grandeur. And nonsense.

Actually Barnes overall winning percentage is about the average percentage for the past 12-15 coaches at UT.
