Looks good. Has possibilities. Hope they get it right.

Great producers and actors. Jeff Bridges may pull of a better Rooster Cogburn than John Wayne! Not to mention the rest of the cast potentially doing the same respectively.

Any western fans in the nation?
Anyone going to check this movie out?
Comments?

I'd rather watch a squirrel pee in a beer bottle in the back of a limo than this debacle.

Hey I still have the visuals of that happening, oh my eyes, me eyes.:)

Gonna be hard to fill the Duke's shoes. Remakes lately have been sub-par at best. We'll see. It'll get the John Wayne fans out though, if for nothing else, title alone.

Coen bros
Jeff Bridges
Josh Brolin
Matt Damon

I think they got this.

No. Just no.

I don't understand the point in this whole idea. This is the western equivalent of remaking Casablanca, saying that Russell Crowe would make a better Rick than Bogey.

May and Potentially are almost as big a word as "if" in the dictionary.....

Never the less I hope they are able to do just that. Also if they remake Casablanca with as solid a cast as this movie has then I would hope the same for it.

Why remake either? Both movies are terrific. They don't need to be redone. It's like repainting the Mona Lisa. Even if it is great, it's still a redo, and you can't improve it. Find another chick to pose.

I'm looking forward to seeing this. The trailer, at least, looks promising. I'm not a fan of the original. Several Wayne Westerns from that era are better than True Grit. The Coen Bros. may not do any better, but I doubt they'll do any worse.

I think Bridges is an overall better actor (I think he has a greater range) than Wayne, but the Western is Wayne's signature genre. I think Jeff Bridges may do well enough to pull off this role, but he's not going to be better. Jeff Bridges in a Western is not better than John Wayne in a Western.

Jeff Bridges > John Wayne
Josh Brolin > Dennis Hopper
Matt Damon > Robert Duvall

The Coen Brothers > Whoever directed the first one

I'll give you the Coen Bros. over Henry Hathaway, but I would take Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall then over Josh Brolin and Matt Damon now. What'll make the remake better is that Kim Darby and Glen Campbell won't be in it. They ruined the original. Kim Darby was cute and spunky enough, but I otherwise wasn't impressed by her acting. Glen Campbell was just flat out terrible. I don't know about the new girl they have playing Mattie Ross, but Matt Damon will be lightyears better as La Boeuf even if he sleepwalks through the whole movie.

Coen Bro.s and Jeff Bridges do True Grit?

"I'm about to embark on a great adventure to avenge my father and find out who peed on his effin' rug. It really tied the room together"

That's solid.

No. Just no.

The Western equivalent of remaking Casablanca would be to remake The Searchers, a far better movie than True Grit.

I can actually make an argument in favor or remaking Searchers. The racial views alone have developed over time, and there are different aspects of the story to tell. I can see where there could be a different, even better, way to tell that story. I don't see that with True Grit.

I disagree that it is a better movie than True Grit, but that is beside the point. It is an example of the quintessential Western actor at the pinnacle of his career surrounded by an all-star cast. It won't be upgraded. It won't be better cast. It won't be better produced or directed or written. It will simply be worse actors doing the same thing with more modern special effects.

You don't know with any specitivity, other than an opinion. You may very well be proven correct but you have no way of knowing. Not even giving this film a chance is egocentric at best. Among the best of one generation against among the best of another generation warrants at the least going to the theatre and watching the movie. I assume that you won't be going by you stated views. I have an ideal, go see it then post how bad it was.

I'm sorry you seem to have gotten your feathers ruffled, especially because you are wrong.

There is no reason to remake this movie, other than the fact that Hollywood seems devoid of original ideas. It is a period piece, and there is no overriding theme to be modernized. I doubt anyone short of Billy Costigan really thinks the cast is better. New and better filming techniques won't help. It was a good movie the first time, and it will be, at best, a knock-off with no new redeeming quality the second. There is a 4.2% chance that I will watch in in theater, mainly because I don't watch many movies in theater anymore. There is a very good chance I will watch it on PPV or HBO, probably after my wife has gone to bed during the summer when there is a paucity of sports and the networks are in reruns so the Tivo is empty, mainly because I watch a lot of movies on PPV or HBO.

If you want to watch a good western, download the original on Netflix. If it leaves you wanting more, pop in a VHS of Rooster Cogburn. I have plenty more recommendations that I guarantee will be better for either the cowboy genre or John Wayne as lead if you would like them.

That is my "ideal," egocentric or not.

We were just talking about that in the other True Grit Thread. It does look like it will be good though.
