I would approach it this way. Ask yourself: "What are Russia's short term and long term objectives?" "Do these objectives align with US objectives?" "Can there be long term peace if the answer to the second question is no and without the US caving to Russian demands?"
Good questions about their long term goals. By nature Russian leadership is extremely corrupt and paranoid so determining their goals is hard for me to do, I'd say both boil down to lining their pockets and staying in power.
As for long term peace, we have had long term peace with Russia if you define peace as not shooting at each other, which I do. One thing Russians of all stripes understand is strength and they will not challenge us directly if we as a country can continue to project strength.
