Tubby Smith Out at Minnesota

The B1G is brutal. That team probably would have finished 2nd in the SEC

I definitely agree that Minnesota would have been an upper-echelon team in the SEC, but you can't pick your conference. Minnesota is apparently committed to fielding a basketbal team that can compete in the Big Ten and, unfortunately, Tubby has not proven that he's capable of doing that.

Would not be surprised to see him filling a vacancy at a major-conference school in the coming weeks. It'd be quite funny if it ended up being Northwestern.

I get all the argument from the other side, but I still think this is a ridiculous move. This is Minnefreakingsota we're talking about here, they're not going to have guys like Smart seriously interested in taking up a job there.

If you're Minnesota, you gotta lower your expectations.

Tubby won between 20-23 in 5 of the 6 years he was at. MN. with one season with 17 wins.

he has taken his team to the NCAA tourney in 3 of his 6 years including this year. He played in the NIT Championship game last year.

He has averaged winning 20 games per year at MN.

I think Minnesota firing Tubby wasn't too shocking---the guy had gotten stale there...plus as far as the administration is concerned they didn't really pony up the bucks for facilities. They are supposed to have some of the worst in the Big 10 for basketball--Williams Arena the basketball complex is pretty out of date. I know they opened a new football field in 2009 but if you want to be a major player you have to spend the $$$$$. Minnesota isn't Ohio State or Indiana....if I were Shaka Smart or Stevens I'd pass on this job. I think they should hire Flip Saunders..he's an alum there not a sexy pick but I don't see any other options.

Interesting move. I don't think it would have gotten better under Tubby but it definitely could get a lot worse with a new coach. Guess you have to try.
