Tyler Baron has entered the portal

Maybe they think those underclassmen can match his production? In some cases, it’s time for the 5th and 6th year guys to move on. This is a position that I believe they think they can fill.

There are more critical spots to allocate those resources (online, secondary, etc).
With whom?

Isnt this what the pros are for? "Brothers"? You dont just abandon your "Brothers". Why cant young men just have fun playing the game and getting a free ride? I've always said that this will lead to a "farm system" for professional fball. Those that dont want an education and just want to play football should have the opportunity to work on their skills in another venue separate the NCAA. The NFL has been using the NCAA for their FREE farm system for years. The NFL has the money to create a nationwide farm system like the MLB has. Problem solved.

Was there ever loyalty to begin with or did players just not have much of a choice? I think if the transfer portal was around in the 90s we would have seen the same thing as we’re seeing now.

I think there was once a much stronger loyalty, yes. But I also agree with you about a portal in the 90s, I don't deny that the system itself imposed some facets of what would appear as loyalty now.

My tone isn't meant to place blame on players. If I even had to point a finger, it'd be at the schools for failing the academic side of "student athlete" and selling out for giant TV network checks. They had a responsibility to keep this sport truly amateur, and somewhere along the way the success got to all their heads, and here we are with whatever this is now. And whatever this is now, is not something I find particularly compelling.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a change in the NIL rules allowing the collective (or school if the changes are made) to require 2-3 year personal services contracts. It's not sustainable long term without them.
That just leads to the employee status issues which have been discussed ad nauseum here. Scholarships are renewed yearly. NIL should be also.

With the transfer rules, couldn't they still leave and just sign an NIL deal with another school?

IMO, the Portal is the bigger of the 2 big changes in the sport.

I wish him well but am not that sad about it. This opens the door for Joshua Josephs who was our 3rd highest ranked recruit in '22 to start alongside James Pearce (who was our highest rated). In very limited snaps Joseph had 18 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. Behind THOSE two studs we have very highly ranked Caleb Herring (123rd overall) and Chandavian Bradley (166th overall) from '23 class. BTW In the '24 class we have the 10 overall player committed DE Jordan Ross. We will be ok

Scholarships can be awarded for 4 years, the NCAA made that change a few years ago.

If they keep the NIL deals through the collective system then they don't have to worry about the employee issue and even if the make the mistake of bringing it inhouse you can be a contractor without being an employee. It's just not sustainable to raise money to land a player then have them break the deal without penalty, this will get worse if there is no control mechanism put in place.

Tyler has been put into a difficult and envyable situation. CJH has put a deadline on who's in or out of bowl practice. I suspect Tyler is out because his intention is to go pro, at the same time he doesn't have a real pro grade at this point, so to leave his options open to come back, it'll be for a different team. Since the transfer portal now has a narrow window, he's got to jump in now or be left out.
I don't think he had a lot of other choices with the deadlines imposed on him.
I'm pulling for him in the NFL....

Sure they could transfer but they couldn't sign another NIL deal unless the collective let them out of their contract. They could transfer without penalty, they just couldn't sign another deal.

Because mediocre schools like Kentucky are going to be willing to pay more since the roster is junk. He would be a top 5 talent on their squad.
The Kentucky head coach is begging the boosters for more money to compete in the SEC. Pick another school with money

Says who? What player is going to sign an NIL deal that says they can't sign a deal with anyone else except that school? Seems like that would hurt recruiting.

I could be wrong, but I believe that is against the rules of NIL

This is why you don’t start Joe ****ing Milton all year….so stupid. So tired of stupid decisions from coaches….

If allowed my guess is that it become standard with all the collectives so where would they go?

This one makes no sense. Dude was obviously a starter. It’s not like he wasn’t get enough chances. And furthermore… What more does he have to prove in college? Your body gets beat up and you only have so many years of football available. Maybe he knows his combine number won’t be amazing but his body of work should get him and opportunity. Regardless, another year of college won’t change his measurables. He should enter the draft.
