Tyler Smith has asked for and received a release from his scholarship at Iowa.

:O !!!!!!

Well I'm not going to get too excited yet. Even if he does transfer to UT there isn't a 100% gurantee he would be playing next year, which is when we will be needed him for a deep run.

Anyone know what he was rated coming out of high school? I remember the incident but didn't pay close attention to recruiting while Buzz was around :p

Yeah, I just saw that. It says that he failed to qualify academically. I thought his only reason for going to Hargrave was not being released by Pearl.

He intentionally failed a course so he wouldn't have to come to UT. We wouldn't let him out of his LOI so he did that because of his dad.

If he would have qualified academically he would have lost a year of eligibility. This is my second post. I am now two for two on my sources when I say it was on purpose. I just hope he winds up where he should have gone in the first place. I think he will look good in orange

if he wants to transfer to UT, A) do we have a space for him and B) does Pearl want him on the team?

We do have space and you have to think Pearl would take him if he wanted to be here.

So is it official that we are the favorite to land him?

I would have a hard time seeing him go to Vandy and Memphis is a longer drive from where he lives/lived I believe...

I'm guessing he will be announcing rather soon where he is going, hopefully in the next few days?

I wasn't living in the knoxville area when Smith came out of high school so I am not familiar with how good of a player he was/is. I know he was 3rd-team All Big Ten this past season, but do you guys think he is or can be as good as the players were are recruiting for next season? This would obviously take away a scholarship we could use so, he would have to be pretty good for that to happen.

It's not official until Bruce Pearl announces that UT is accepting another transfer by the name of Tyler Smith. Shouldn't be much longer before we hear something.

Was just gonna ask the same thing about where this would put the Vols with future recruits.

IF... TS ends up in Knoxville, of course.

Not sure either... but judging by last season that he had he can be a more polished Duke Crews... also more experienced. He seems like a unique player.. can score, rebound, block shots, and dish out some assists and steal the ball.

I'm hoping if we get him he will have a decent mid-ranged shot though, that's something Crews really lacks that would make Crews a really dangerous player.

I am concerned about how this affects the Class of '08 too, in regards to playing-time aspirations and available schollies. But, no one in the '08 class has committed to UT yet, and T. Smith could take this team from best team in a rebuilding SEC to serious NC contender. With a player of his caliber, we should focus on the "now" and worry about '08 "later." Later meaning the day after T. Smith signs.

I don't think there's much reason to be concerned with the 08' class... I actually would like to have him instead of saving the scholarship for next year. We don't want to load our scholarships into 1 or 2 years and have to majorly rebuild after those 2 years.

It would also help with recruiting if this guy helps us take it up 1 more notch on the national scene. More success = more interest. On the down side, players might be discouraged with the lack of playing time if they were to come here.. but that's also a good think if 4-5 star caliber players are worried about PT at UT. Either way I don't think it's such a big deal with our recruiting. All that matters is this guy could be our last piece of the puzzle to make a Final Four run.

I agree with the idea of spreading out the schollies as much as possible, but adding T. Smith actually has the opposite effect. His eligibility would be that a of a sophomore, giving us 5 sophomores next year. But, whatever. We can agree that this would be a great addition. For all of the talk of the Vols needing a center for next year, I think Smith fills the low-post void. Between him, Chism, and Crews, we would have three very capable forwards. We also have the pleasantly-surprising Childress, who is suddenly a three-point threat. At this point, anything from Prince and Williams would be gravy for our potatoes. We also add Tatum to the backcourt. He could also play forward, since he is above 6'4". :p Sorry, Dane, but I couldn't resist.

Ah, yeah I forgot Prince was going to be a sophomore when he comes in :\ that does make it 5, was thinking 4 which will hurt if they all stay till their senior years.

If Smith is elgible next year it will be his last in college

Also his father now lives in McMinnville
