I have very mixed emotions. On the one hand, someone has to act to stop Assad. Letting evil tyrants know that the world won't let them kill innocents like he has done, especially with chemical weapons, has value.

On the other hand, this kind of thing always seems to have negative consequences to us that often reverberate for a long time.

Toppling secular governments in the Middle East doesn't have a good track record...

If only we could say the same thing about Nick Saban...

Did the Syrian military have warning?

Syrian military officials appeared to anticipate Thursday's night raid on Syria 's Shayrat airbase, evacuating personnel and moving equipment ahead of the strike, according to an eyewitness to the strike, ABC News is reporting.

Yet, Trump scolded reporters two days before, telling them he wasn't going to tell anyone what he was going to do militarily. The president made his remarks during a press conference at the White House on Wednesday with King Abdullah II of Jordan.

“I’m not saying I’m doing anything one way or the other, but I’m certainly not going to be telling you,” Trump said.

So, just to play devil's advocate, if our goal was to actually really hurt Syria militarily, didn't Trump defeat that purpose by giving Russia a heads-up that we were attacking the Syrian airbase? If we gave the Russians *enough time* to get their personnel out of harm's way, then didn't that also allow Syria time to potentially scramble some of their jets? If these are military pilots, many of them were likely on the base and capable of scrambling their jet off the base in a matter of minutes... that's what they're designed to do.

The initial number of destroyed jets I've read is 9. This airbase had far more than that onsite.

Seems to me this demonstrates that our missile strike was more a 'show of power' than a real attempt to really harm the Syrian air force. Yep. We're still the freshest smelling military on the face of the Earth, by God.

You're right. We should have given no advanced notice and just nuked that ****er, Russians and all.

This is just a continuation of the rudderless policy this country has had on the Syrian Civil War ever since it started.

If there is no policy, you should do nothing.

Again, there is no direct proof of Assad being behind this. This very same scenario happened in Ghouta in 2013 and UN inspectors confirmed that it wasn't Assad...

Why are people so eager to swallow these claims?

I support limited, effective strikes, against military targets used to launch planes and deploy chemical weapons against innocent civilians.

You know the rebels we are supporting are the only people in this conflict prove to have used chemical weapons, right?

So this bombing and our involvement in general remain unjustified

I agree with you, he made the right move by informing the Russians. Who cares about assets being moved? This was simply a show of power designed to send a message. Losing an air field is a message received.

Granted, I would've preferred he had done nothing

I think I would have waited to respond. We could have told the russians knowing they would tell Syria and just wait, let the anticipation build then strike.

I couldn't even imagine how many of those Tomahawk missiles we've got stockpiled somewhere, or any ordnance for that matter.

We have a few....................but not as many as you would think. A lot of that ordnance has been shipped off to other places as FMS.

Not sure if there are any other SOAD fans out there, but I can't think of a more fitting song today than this one.

I don't agree with the strike, but I think that the way it was executed was the best that it possibly could have been. Don't have all the information that the POTUS or the intel has, but on the surface this just seems like a unnecessarily sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong.
