UAB game discussion

I met a Vol fan today. Though he didnt know much about UAB outside of our colors (green and gold), he was a little less than happy that UT has chosen to play UAB and Memphis in the OOC schedule and doesnt blame Bama for not wanting to play UAB.

Hackney is very good, but the thing that makes him unique is the fact that he is huge and probably one of the hardest QB's to tackle in the college game.

Against our defensive front seven, he'd better be hard to tackle. He also needs to be very durable. I expect that he will be punished and spanked all game long. The first quarter, I expect to see a ballgame but Tennessee's depth, speed and strength will quickly wear the boys from B'ham down.

33rd is pretty lofty. Sorry to say it, but I would be shocked if Southern Miss and UTEP don't win their divisions.

33rd is pretty high... highest in CUSA (higher than Memphis, Southern Miss, and UTEP.)

They picked UAB to win the East Division and the title overall. UAB was picked second in the CUSA East at Media Days only because Southern Miss has a 5-0 record against UAB. Most media experts wanted to pick UAB based on what they saw on paper, but many opted to go with Southern Miss until UAB can prove they can beat them.

Exactly. Who you got to win the C-USA divisions and overall (don't be a homer about it)?

East- UAB
West- UTEP

Champ- UTEP (unless it's in BHM where UAB plays much better)

Memphis will have a very tough challenge in replacing the talent they lost (including adding a new QB). Southern Miss also lost quite a few significant players from a year ago. UAB is the deepest team in CUSA... not just in the Eastern division, but throughout the league.

Seems like UTEP will have a pretty good offense this season, though. Solid receiver corps and a good QB in Jordan Palmer. They could go undefeated.

I hope not, then we'd have a bunch of idiots wanting them in the National Champ like they wanted Utah last year! :eek:lol:

UTEP's schedule is a joke. It's not even half as hard as UTAH's was last year. They definitely could go undefeated.

at New Mexico State
Houston
New Mexico
at Memphis
at Tulane
Marshall
at Rice
Tulsa
Texas Southern
UAB
at SMU

UTEP does have a favorable schedule (especially OOC), but they have to go TO Memphis which will be a big challenge. Houston is going to be quite a good team this year. And playing at Tulane may be a bit of an issue as well... Tulane will be MUCH improved from a year ago. And of course, UTEP wont have it easy with UAB either. I've actually seen several experts pick UTEP to beat UAB in the regular season, but then UAB to win in the CUSA title game. It will be interesting to see how UTEP adjusts to the new conference.

True: both the football and avoiding getting held up at gunpoint.

 I don't remember anything about pushing for a national championship bid.

Here's the report on UAB's scrimmage today if anyone's interested.

Hackney, Lindsey Connect In UAB Intrasquad Scrimmage
Defense solid in Saturday exhibition

Aug. 13, 2005

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior Darrell Hackney connected with wide receiver Reggie Lindsey on touchdown passes of 33, 21 and 14 yards, but the UAB defense drew strong praise from head coach Watson Brown after UAB's intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday. Hackney was 11-for-20 for 162 yards with the three scores while playing about a third of the snaps in a scrimmage which lasted just under two hours in the midday sun.

"We weren't very consistent today but I'm happy that our No. 1 and No.2 offenses had no turnovers," Brown said. "Overall, I felt like we didn't have great ball control today. We looked for the big plays but still didn't execute the offense very well. The offensive line was all over the place. I would say that probably one of our biggest concerns right now is to get a consistent offensive line.

"Defensively, our linebackers were in position to make plays and made some good open field tackles," Brown said. "This is a young group, so I don't think it's going to be three set guys. I hope we have six to nine (linebackers) step up and are ready to play."

The Blazer defense did a fair job of containing the offense's run game, holding the UAB backs to 115 yards on 33 carries. They also allowed just three plays of more than 22 yards, with Lindsey's 33-yard TD catch the only one for a score.

Lindsey caught five passes for 92 yards and the three touchdowns while six other receivers caught at least two passes from the five quarterbacks who saw action. Chris Williams, Chad Wilmott, Joseph Webb and 2005 redshirt Sam Hunt all saw action as the UAB signal caller Saturday. Williams was six-of-11 for 53 yards while Wilmott completed four of nine passes for 32 yards. Webb added a four-for-10 performance with 80 yards.

"We needed a big play guy and Reggie showed he could fill that spot," Brown said. "We threw to a lot of players but overall Reggie played really well today."

Incumbent specialist Parker Mullins got the nod on special teams and connected for field goals of 23, 35 and 37 yards on the afternoon.

The Blazers have Sunday off before returning to the practice field for two sessions on Monday. Brown's club kicks off the 2005 season at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a road contest at Tennessee

You think yall are better than you were in 98 and we're worse than then? I'm not sure one could say either of those things and be truthful.

It's possible, but will you?

UAB's Darrell Hackney was named to the Davey OBrien Watch List for the 3rd straight season. Erik Ainge of UT was also named to this year's watch list.
