UConn vs South Carolina Pre Game Report

UCONN is great getting it down the court with minimum dribble. They feed the ball into Stewart and she immediately goes up with it. No dribbling. Also, they have great spacing.

The Stanford loss was a 1 in 100 fluke. UCONN will cruise to a 10th national title.

UConn has too much talent and is too well coached. They are too much for everybody. Watch when their players get the ball in the paint--Stewart and Mosqueda-Lewis: They make a quick jab step and shoot the ball: no dribbling, no hestitation, no indecision. Catch, quick fake and the ball goes up. That is good coaching. Our players, especially Graves but sometimes Izzy too, hold the ball too long, try to dribble the ball, just are not fundamental. Both of these teams have a lot of athletes, but SC is not as polished as the huskies. And UConn is strong at both ends of the score. We would have trouble scoring against them. Massengale and Middleton would get eaten alive by their quick guards.

They are face guarding Mitchell. Why isn't their coach calling for some screens for her?

Going pretty much as I predicted. Not sure anyone will be able to compete with Geno anytime soon.

I like Dawn but I've been less than enthused with the puffing up of South Carolina by ESPN specifically in order to draw ratings for this game. Its not sour grapes--I think they are better than Tennessee but they aren't on UConn's level. I think they are in a solid position as the 3rd #1 seed but behind UConn and Notre Dame.

I just don't understand why very few women's basketball teams understand how to set screens except for UCONN.

And do you notice a difference between the way UConn passes and moves the ball and the way we pass and move it? They move the ball about 20 percent faster--more passing, less dribbling. When players are in scoring spots, they get the ball--boom. We've gotten better, but we are a level or two below that of the huskies. And Geno has at least four or 5 talented offensive players. Up 16 at half and probably win this game by 25+.

That is transparent of them. They're trying hard to manufacture a rivalry (which you can't do in one season) and renew some interest in women's basketball because the ratings for regular season women's games have been in a steady decline and UConn's conference games aren't worth covering in their current mid-major league.

If I was reffing this game, I'd call Jefferson for palming/carrying the ball on every dribble. She gets away with it though, :(

Like I say. The SEC does not play a competitive style of ball. The Cocks looked as clueless against the back picks as we did.

Also, I think Geno is head and shoulders better than the other coaches in the game. UConn is not that much more talented than South Carolina if any. They just execute. Every part of every player's game has been fine tuned as has the offense as a whole. South Carolina's defense has been oppressive in the SEC but it is on a pace to give up 90 against UConn. Yeah, they are overrated but they are still the best or second best team in our league.

Someone is going to have to hire a better coach for any other team to catch UConn. They may need a coach from a men's team or someone who is willing to take a pay cut just to go compete. No one else is fine tuning their players the way he is. No one is getting the execution he is, and it isn't even close.

When Geno came on the scene he built his team to beat Tennessee and our style of play. You won't beat them playing defense and rebounding the ball because they do both those things just about as well while they also run an efficient offense. Someone will have to build a team and create a style to beat them or they will have to beat them at their own game.

You could tell 15 years ago that UConn with Geno was going to be a force. He gave us problems when he had very little talent, and as he won more and got more talent, the tide shifted. They play defense as good or better than we do--and are much better offensively. And of course for a few years now he's been signing about three genuine blue chip players for every one that we sign. I don't much like him but he's a damn good coach.

You never know when Geno era will end. We found that out the hard way with CPS. Better enjoy while they can at UCONN.

Great summary. Pat was the James Nasmith of the women's game but Geno is the Wooden.

Yes it has come to the point that it is UCONN and then everybody else is playing for number two. And, it's not just talent but coaching.

He certainly is a great coach but when has he had very little talent? Not since we first played them '95. Nykeshia Sales, Kara Wolters, Sue Bird, Tamika Williams, Swin Cash, Asjia Jones....and that Russian player whose name escapes me - all top ten players signed in the '90s by Geno.
