UF player caught using dead girls credit card

lawgator,
Sorry. You already answered my question. Due to the horrible circumstances, I would think that he would be suspended indefinitely until it is sorted out. I would be amazed if he was allowed to play until then.

Lawgator,
I am a UT grad but am married to a UF grad and have 1 kid who graduated from UF and one in UF. That being said, I love UT and I like the Gators. You seem to be a reasonable person with rational, well thought out answers. What will your opinion be of Urban Meyer if there is a token punishment such as 2-3 games?
thanks

I would consider 6-8 games token for this crime.

He doest play on anything but special teams... he's outta here. If he was a starter, I'd put money on it that he'd play and play against the Vols.

Yeah that's confusing how it was left activated for so long.

It is a hassle trying to prove credit fraud. Not to mention the hoops you have to jump through to deactivate a card when you are not the person responsible for the account. Sad to say but I am sure the credit card co. would want to see a copy of the death certificate as well as other documents.

I am well aware of that my aunt just died and we got the death certificate in about three days and from there it took us about a week to get them all cancelled.

I am as cynical as anybody about the motivation for any team, including the Gators, to keep players on the team, give them second chances, etc. I believe most of the coaches, and this includes Fulmer and Meyer, when they say they want to give players a chance to learn from their mistakes, experience discipline in the real world, and reform themselves. There are some good life lessons to be learned in that context.

But this is just beyond the pale if for no other reason than that it is such a terrible black eye to the university. And this is not taking the card of some random dead person. This was the card of a girl killed with a fellow player in a tragic accident.

I am sure he will be suspeneded until such time that there is some formality to the charge either being proven or a guilty plea or something. But I would be absolutely flabbergasted if he plays again for UF at all. I just don't see it happening.

And CovVol, his importance to the team is irrelevant on this issue anyway. Assuming there is not some terrible mistake of identification and that he did do this, he just has to go. I would think that there would be an absolute revolt amongst the student body and alumni if he were allowed to play after this.

VIA, I see what you are saying. But even if there were horrible things going on at other places, that would not in any way diminish the offensiveness of this.

I'm with law here. It's a pretty despicable act to knowingly take advantage of someone who is dead because of the impact you have on the family. Is it in the same category as rape? No, but that doesn't excuse the action. We aren't talking about him using the card once, or even a couple of times, on some paltry purchases. In all honesty this is a pretty stupid crime on the part of the player because it is obvious he lacks any sort of decency or sense.

Exactly right.

They've got amounts and they've got him using it a lot at a station near his family's place in Jacksonville. He's done as a Gator, I have to think.

According to above article, Meyer is going to issue a statement. I am very concerned he say anything to remotely look the other way on this.

What is your problem? By all means, tell me about a recent story that is more disgusting than a player using a credit card of a teammate's dead girlfriend.
ViA hit on a number of them. Those are just a few of the myriad of crimes that happen with regularity that are of far greater significance than this incident.

I guess I judged prematurely. When the article failed to mention his dad, I took that as his dad was an absent dad. I stand corrected. I don't know the first thing about the guy's dad. It is a very sad, insensitive situation though, and I'll leave it at that.:hi:

Hat, while it is obviously true that there are many crimes committed by student athletes that involve injuring someone physically and are more significant in that regard, they usually do not have some direct relationship to the team. Here, the guy goes the day after a fellow player and his girlfriend die in an accident and, under the guise of helping out, steals her card and uses it SEVENTY times.

This family will for the rest of their lives have the loss of their daughter made that much worse by realizing that a teammate of the player took advantage of her and them.

I just can't get over the linkage to the football team and the circumstances. Its too close to home.
