Jones had already cleaned out the division of all the top contenders aside from Henderson. Add in the fact that Chael is a bigger PPV draw than guys like Gustafsson, and it's clear to see why Sonnen was the choice.
What fighter should get the shot?
I think the only other logical choice would have been Dan Henderson.
An actual in light heavyweight that has actually beaten quality light heavyweights would be my pick. I'd rather see a rematch of a deserving opponent with a punchers chance than watch Sonnen lose yet another title fight. He's lost his last three title fights and has never held a meaningful title. He was the Gladiator Champion, whatever that is.
Jones as you put it, cleaned out the division and I tend to believe it was the deepest division in the UFC prior to his arrival. He not only cleaned it out but he's unbeaten in the process. That leads me to believe a Sonnen loss is all but guaranteed and while Chael may sell PPV's, they won't be getting any of my money. I'm going watch it online or go out. and I know others who won't be paying for it either. They are just as upset as I am that Dana sold out the fans for a fight that has no business taking place all because big mouth sells tickets.
I'd rather take my chances on a rematch of a quality fighter that isn't 2-2 in his last 4 fights coming off a loss and is actually in the weight class. At this point, I think Bones would beat Silva so of course I don't think Sonnen can beat Bones. Just because Bones cleaned out the division doesn't mean he couldn't be beaten in a rematch. They'd certainly have a better shot to do it than Sonnen. JDS beat Cain in the span of a minute the first time around and the second fight was the complete opposite going 5 rounds with Cain dominating. There are a number of rematches that go the other way and I would have rather seen a rematch, personally.
I guess I just don't agree with that. You say the only other logical choice would be Dan Henderson as if you believe Chael Sonnen was a logical choice. I disagree Chael Sonnen was a logical choice. I think he's the opposite of a logical choice. Most fans would have never considered him if not for Dana bringing it up and making the fight happen. He's coming off a title loss in a lower weight class and will be facing a bigger and in my opinion, better opponent. In no way is Chael Sonnen a logical choice to fight Jon Jones.
I'll eat my words if Sonnen pulls off an upset and wins his undeserved title shot but I believe the only way it goes past the first round is if Jones plays it safe early because he knows how embarrassing it would be to lose to Sonnen. Otherwise, I believe it will be over in dominating fashion in the first round. Although if Jones' really wanted, he could play it safe the whole fight and pick Sonnen apart while stuffing his takedowns. Sonnen may be a great wrestler but not only does Jones have a size advantage, he's also 100% in takedown defense. The one advantage Sonnen relies on, will most likely been rendered useless. This whole fight was about money and the beatdown will show.

Also, any one of your "deserving" fighters could have stepped up when called upon to fight Jones before UFC 151, but they didn't.
Dana is in the business of making money. I understand why Sonnen is fighting Jones. What fighter should get the shot? I think the only other logical choice would have been Dan Henderson.
You must have missed where I said that Jones should win, and that I hope he would. The only point I an arguing, and have been arguing, is that I understand why Chael is getting the shot. It was purely a business decision.
I think it's funny that all you "experts" pretend you know what is right for the UFC. And I find it even sillier that you are boycotting purchasing the PPV, like that is going to change the way business is done.
We have went over this a thousand times before, as to why certain guys didn't step up. It's a money making business, guys have to make sure the time is right for them.
When the company that is making them a star comes calling to do it a favor and to give you a shot at the title, you take it. If you don't, then don't be surprised if you get passed up for the opportunity.
Making stuff up? You get all butthurt crazy every time someone says a negative thing about the UFC.
If fighters are selfish enough not to take a title fight when asked, fans can't complain that Dana or anyone else "sold out" when they pass up on those fighters.
It's not even remotely being "butthurt." It's frustration with guys like you who are wannabe matchmakers and take every opportunity to dog Sonnen, White, etc.
You do know this is a message board right? We are allowed to complain if we want. Btw I tried to not have this discussion again. Frustration often turns in to butthurt.
He had his shot, and got choked out.
You commend Machida for his "business decision" but criticize Dana White for his?
I take no issue with anyone complaining on a message board. But when it also comes in the form of hypocrisy, you should get called on it.
He is one of the guys that got turned down the fight. That is the question you asked isn't it? And if memory serves me, Hendo was hurt. At 40+ do you expect him to fight on a bum knee. You missed the point of the "business decision" comment.
Personally, Dan Henderson should be fighting Jones at UFC 159. He jeopardized his spot by not telling Dana when he first injured his knee, which was something like 3 weeks before UFC 151. So, I can see how he was passed in favor of Sonnen.
Please clarify your "business decision" comment.
