And further breaking news:

Ukraine president fires military chief amid calls for government to end violence | Fox News

As fires burned in Kiev during a second night of deadly clashes between Ukraine dissidents and police, President Viktor Yanukovych fired his military chief and the military announced it could take part in a national anti-terrorist operation to restore order.

You get relieved out of that kind of post for several things. None of which are typically good, but in this case, I could see the refusal of orders to carry out this "operation to restore order" as one of the reasons especially in light of the military saying afterwards they would go after the protesters.

And when you contemplate using your military against anti-government protesters, you are drawing a huge line between us and them and the chances of not collapsing into a full blown civil war just decreased dramatically.

I think it's going to get worse before it gets better.

According to Townhall.com, President Obama threatens consequences for Ukraine violence against peaceful protesters. The USA has considered joining European partners to impose sanctions aimed at ending deadly street clashes that are sparking fears of a civil war.

I'm afraid the administration (and Europe) sat watching from the sidelines too long on this one. Difficult to put the toothpaste back in the tube after three months.

We'll have to wait & see with this on what sanctions if any are considered to have any effect. But it is quite messy indeed.

Anyone remember Georgia?

Watch for Russian tanks to come rolling into Kiev shortly after the closing ceremonies. Stabilizing action to protect ethnic Russians is what it will be called.

Well, now I see that The President of Ukraine & opposition leaders agree to a truce after violence that left at least 26 dead. Received an email from foxnews.com on confirmation.

I don't think this is a good sign:

BBC News - Ukraine President Yanukovych sacks army chief amid crisis

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has sacked the head of the armed forces, Col Gen Volodymyr Zamana, according to the president's website.
. . .
Earlier the state security service announced it was launching a nationwide "anti-terrorist" campaign to deal with a growing "extremist threat".

There was a suggestion the armed forces could be deployed for the first time.
. . .
It is so far unclear what prompted Mr Yanukovych's decision to dismiss the commander-in-chief of the armed forces - who has been in place two years and a day, according to his official biography.

But it came hours after the head of the top security agency, Oleksandr Yakimenko, said an "anti-terrorist operation" was being launched after "extremist groups" seized government buildings and arms depots.

Dozens more reported killed.

I don't get why these protests are happening. The leader doesn't want to get entrapped by the EU's crap.

Jesus, guy. Are you an American champion of democracy or champion of totalitarianism? Forget about the EU.

Seriously, though. The Ukraine is currently divided between an ethnic Russian, pro-Russian power structure in the East and an ethnic Ukrainian, pro-Western minority (at least politically) in the West. At least this is how I understand it.

I saw on Yahoo (I know) this morning that apparently protesters have taken 67 police hostage. This after a truce had been reported. So much for the truce I guess.

That truce that was made yesterday has been shattered & was broken through the night & now more than 100 have died & 67 police have been taken hostage. The WH is urging for the President of Ukraine to call the military force to retreat & to back-off from engaging on the protesters.

BBC reporting 21 protesters were killed, I'm assuming, yesterday by sniper shots. This is only going to get worse before it gets better.

You're sadly mistaken if you think its a democracy. We have the other form of a representative government, an aristocracy. Only the elite actually hold any real power.

Are you the poster who was arguing with me a week or two ago about our nation's history with Native Americans? I think you are, but I could be wrong.
