As fires burned in Kiev during a second night of deadly clashes between Ukraine dissidents and police, President Viktor Yanukovych fired his military chief and the military announced it could take part in a national anti-terrorist operation to restore order.
I think it's going to get worse before it gets better.
The USA has considered joining European partners to impose sanctions aimed at ending deadly street clashes that are sparking fears of a civil war.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has sacked the head of the armed forces, Col Gen Volodymyr Zamana, according to the president's website.
. . .
Earlier the state security service announced it was launching a nationwide "anti-terrorist" campaign to deal with a growing "extremist threat".
There was a suggestion the armed forces could be deployed for the first time.
. . .
It is so far unclear what prompted Mr Yanukovych's decision to dismiss the commander-in-chief of the armed forces - who has been in place two years and a day, according to his official biography.
But it came hours after the head of the top security agency, Oleksandr Yakimenko, said an "anti-terrorist operation" was being launched after "extremist groups" seized government buildings and arms depots.
I don't get why these protests are happening. The leader doesn't want to get entrapped by the EU's crap.
Jesus, guy. Are you an American champion of democracy or champion of totalitarianism? Forget about the EU.
Seriously, though. The Ukraine is currently divided between an ethnic Russian, pro-Russian power structure in the East and an ethnic Ukrainian, pro-Western minority (at least politically) in the West. At least this is how I understand it.
You're sadly mistaken if you think its a democracy. We have the other form of a representative government, an aristocracy. Only the elite actually hold any real power.
