UNC Basketball, Part Deux

My thoughts:

- God I miss having a shooter on the team.
- Paige should have been shooting two at the end...no way that's not a foul.
- If Tokoto had missed that reverse jam, I'd have sent him home...on the spot.
- To steal from the great Merle Haggard, "Are the good times really over for good?" Are we ever going to have a combination of good big men and good shooters on our team ever again?
- Why can't we finish a game? It's not like we're playing all freshmen and sophomores.
- Is it the general consensus that Paige's performance is attributable to his ailments? If so, when do you accept your fate and figure out how to win while he gets healthy? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but what did he add to that game last night. Kid is tough as nails, has the heart of a warrior, but his physical limitations are a serious liability right now...and everyone wants to act like somehow he will miraculously overcome it and save us in every game.

Who has won a national title more recently?

That was a helluva game. Carolina played very well. Duke wins by 10+ in Chapel Hill.

Lol you're better than that

Also, highly doubt that spread unless you find more depth somehow.. Doubtful

Haha You're right, sorry for the stupid comment. I was pretty hammered when I wrote that and I'm paying for it today. Luckily a half inch of snow and ice shuts down this area and allows people to work from home.

I will stand by my -10 spread. Duke plays better on the road and I think the adjustments Duke will hopefully make defensively will be the difference.

Anti-Roy, not anti-UNC...and your stated reason why I don't like him is dead wrong. Roy lost the Mike Miller recruiting battle fair and square to Donovan, and he tried turning Donovan in to the NCAA. It was a b!t€h move.

You're pissed about losing to Duke, because usually you laugh when I post about Roy...I get it. Your team choked, I'd be pissed too.

But also know this...my cousin's son just signed to play OT for UNC (William Sweet from Jacksonville), so I have a new reason to cheer for UNC football.

I also met Coach Hatchell back in 2009 when UNC played my sister's team in the NCAA tournament. She was very gracious and cordial, which was unexpected because she's so intense on the sidelines.

You're right. I was just mad as hell after the game and needing an inappropriate vent.

Good luck to your family member!

Paige is having a poor year given what we saw he could do last year, that's for sure.

After giving away these big leads at Louisville and Duke, I'm zapped. I could have sworn we had that game won last night. I was nearly to the point of posting some "In your face" typical fan smack to the Dukies on here, but figured I'd hold off just in case. Once we hit overtime, I knew it was over. There was no coming back from that choke.

Paige really having a down year for what he could be doing. UNC has so much talent but can't seem to put it together in some of these big games.

I actually said "it's over" after a failed Duke possession late in the game. I am typically from the Yogi Berra "it ain't over till it's over" school of optimism when it comes to my sports teams, but last night I was sure that game was finished.

I was a bit inebriated like yourself, but wasn't there a point towards the end, where Duke turned the ball over, but a Carolina foul or travel (or something another) immediately gave Duke the ball back. Only to then immediately throw the ball away again? I could have sworn I saw that.

Was that the moment?

I think it was around the 3 minute mark after Jones or someone missed a layup and it was lingering around a 10 point game. Carolina then made a series of mistakes and missed free throws. The one that really sticks out was the poor inbounds pass thrown to the sideline. I'm still shocked Duke won the game.

I know what you mean about being zapped. This year just doesn't seem destined to be anything special. With all the attrition, academic scandal, deaths of those close to Roy and the program...I actually had the thought last night that, "it's really going to be more of a relief when this season ends."

I checked the recruiting info, though, and it doesn't look like we've got a great class nailed down for next year. Are the two SF guys, Brown and Ingram, considered to be heavy leans to UNC? If not, there's not much reason to think that we are raising the talent level next year.

Yeah he has been bad... It's crazy

If he finds his groove, and Tokoto brings it every night they will still be a tough out come March.. Brice and Kennedy can play with just about anyone down on the Block

Those two are long shots IMO. Better chance at Ingram.. Everyone should be back next year, and also a healthy Pinson(would be starting a IMO). 2016 will be the big year to load up

I see. I agree that losing Pinson was a big wild-card for this year. I think he could have done some nice things. I could have sworn Tokoto was a senior...hell, it seems like he's been there 7 years.

I know I'm disoriented by the collapse last night, but I just don't see how we're going to be serious contenders without a deadly long-range shooter, that seemingly every team has except UNC and Tennessee.

Thanks prof! Sweet was one of nine early enrollees at UNC...really looking forward to watching him in Carolina blue.

Haha. Well played. Good luck to your cousin. I hope he has success at Carolina. I hope you don't take it personally when I rip UNC's football program, I realize that there are mostly good kids on the team, I actually went to high school with some guys that played there. I tend to have a problem with UNC football fans because they can't stand UT and they somehow always think they're the "Sleeping Giant" that will be awoken season after season.

That makes two of us.

UNC Scout forum is calling for Roy's head.

Ordinary day, I guess.

I don't really follow recruiting (neither UNC bball or UT fball) like I used to. All I know atm is that we have an in-state kid committed for next year who barely made the ESPN 100.

Provided we don't get a postseason ban next year, that's pretty much the last I would expect to see anything good out of a UNC team for a while.

Maybe it's just the negaHeel in me, but I think we're nearing dark days again, like post Dean/Guth. Recruiting is no longer there and sanctions loom. I think Roy will probably coach through the sanctions (however long they last) and then retire.

I wish I had your optimism. I just don't see it this way. I would agree with your assessment, but it seems to assume that we will face no sanctions.

Which, hell, maybe we won't. Who knows.

Tangential to the thread, and I know what you mean about the "sleeping giant" nonsense. However, had UNC really committed itself to football (almost impossible for a bball school) a decade or two ago before everyone and their brother had state of the art facilities, I do believe they could have been a program perennially at the top of the ACC, second only to FSU and maybe Miami. Certainly better and more capable than VT.

But that ship has sailed.

Every fan base has their crazies. IC is a good place to see UNC's crazy people, just like the Football and Political forums here.

My question to UNC fans who want to get rid of Roy would be "Who would you hire that would be better than Roy?" I can't think of anyone. He's a hall of fame coach who has won the same amount of NCAA titles as Dean Smith. Roy has missed recently on some recruits, but when he gets his guys in place, typically a great 5 and a great 1, UNC will be clicking on all cylinders. A lot Duke fans had this same mentality pre 2009-10 season, we all saw how that worked out. This UNC team is still capable of making a run in March, but Paige is going to have to step his game up for them to be successful. He's too good to have the numbers he had last night.

Dang, and I thought I might get lambasted for my negative demeanor!

I know this is not a discussion for this thread, but I really just don't care anymore when it comes to Roy. You see, I was never that enthralled with him to begin with. Obviously, there's no denying the success we've enjoyed with him at the helm. However, I was quite put off by the fact that he seemed miserable at his introductory PC and seemed barely able to avoid a breakdown over his pain and sorrow for having to leave KU. Couple that with the underachievement, the AA studies debacle (of which, he HAD to have had some knowledge), his "screw you" attitude towards anyone who would question the well-being of the program, it leaves me apethetic when it comes to whether or not he is the coach.

Now the assistants, I would hate to lose some of them (McGrath is my favorite on the entire staff), and I am fully aware of the potential "be careful what you ask for" consequence that looms whenever we have to hire another coach.
