UNC Basketball, Part Deux

RDU, I'm just curious. What do you think will become of Duke after K leaves? Whenever the hell that will be - honestly, I think the guy could still coach for another 15 years at least, although I know some of that is the product of his hair stylist's exquisite hair coloring abilities. But, nonetheless.

UNC went through the ringer after Dean (and honestly Guth was just riding the coattails - his recruiting was awful), and it looks like we may soon have to do the same again once Roy rides out the sanctions (of course, this is depending upon whether or not the sanctions actually come - I'm assuming they will.)

Dang, and I thought I might get lambasted for my negative demeanor!

I know this is not a discussion for this thread, but I really just don't care anymore when it comes to Roy. You see, I was never that enthralled with him to begin with. Obviously, there's no denying the success we've enjoyed with him at the helm. However, I was quite put off by the fact that he seemed miserable at his introductory PC and seemed barely able to avoid a breakdown over his pain and sorrow for having to leave KU. Couple that with the underachievement, the AA studies debacle (of which, he HAD to have had some knowledge), his "screw you" attitude towards anyone who would question the well-being of the program, it leaves me apethetic when it comes to whether or not he is the coach.

Now the assistants, I would hate to lose some of them (McGrath is my favorite on the entire staff), and I am fully aware of the potential "be careful what you ask for" consequence that looms whenever we have to hire another coach.

:twocents:

I like Roy; always have. I'm glad he came here. He certainly steered the ship that was lost absent a Dean Smith Northern Star.

But, provided sanctions do come down, I think he should ride them out (out of courtesy to the next coach), then retire. It would be a very sad ending to a great career, but sometimes that happens.

It would be really nice for them to sign Jaylen Brown and Stephen Zimmerman in this class, maybe have a shot with Thon Maker, who is going to reclassify to 2015 (I don't know his interest level or even if he's still available). Next year, they're looking pretty good with Harry Giles and Seventh Woods, already have Jalek Felton for 2017. Let's hold off on the obituary.

UNC football had a series of missteps that started when Mack Brown left for Texas. Carl Torbush sucked. John Bunting sucked, and Butch Davis is the one I primarily blame for the NCAA mess that has shamed the entire AD, although more regular students took those sham classes than student-athletes, and of the student-athletes, a higher percentage were football players than basketball players.

Butch Davis coached at The U. He's a pro at keeping at-risk students eligible.

Not RDU, but I think it all depends on the coaching hire obviously. Can Collins, Capel, Wojo, Amaker or Dawkins break through? I don't think so personally. Can Brey come in and be successful? He's clearly the best K disciple, but he wasn't a player. Would he be accepted by the fanbase? I think for Duke, the replacement of K will be a real struggle. A five year ride in the ditch struggle.

One more thing to consider, re: Carolina basketball. For the first time in several seasons, they should have every regular contributor back next season. I don't see Paige, Johnson, Meeks, or Jackson leaving early.

Jaylen Brown could come to Chapel Hill and have a Carmelo Anthony-like effect as a freshman.

It's hard to say, but I'm sure K will make the hire himself. Like VolFanBill pointed out there's Dawkins, Wojo, Collins, Bray, even Tommy Amaker, I think Jeff Capel should also be in consideration. I find it interesting that they are all at institutions similar to Duke, small, good academic private schools. It's like they are all jockeying for position of K's job to prove that they can win at a similar school. If Duke stays within the family my guess would be Chris Collins, he seems to be doing a good job at Northwestern, which I believe is the only Power 5 school to never make the NCAA Tournament. If Duke decided to expand it's coaching search the first guy I would call would be Brad Stevens.

Whenever K does decide to retire, I think he will do like Dean did and set up the next guy with a very talented squad. That 98 UNC team was great, so was Duke's, better than UK's, but that's another matter. I see K sticking around another 4-5 years. Hopefully one more title run left.

They just had another misstep, they scheduled UGA for the 2016 Chick Fil A kickoff.

"Primarily blame"

Nope. Not gonna throw Butch Davis under the bus to save the Dean Dome. UNC already tried that; it is mutually incompatible with the known FACTS regarding this wretched, vile scandal.

The fraudulent academic eligibility scheme was designed and implemented specifically for basketball players.. It was designed to keep the Rasheed Wallace's of the early 90's academically eligible while they sat around in their dorms smoking weed and playing Mortal Kombat all day. If the football team hadn't found out and started flocking to the FAKE classes in droves, no one would have ever found out and UNCheat would still be shoving their "Carolina Way" BS down everyone's throats. Butch Davis said himself that he took advantage of a system that was already in place.

And LOL at UNC being a sleeping giant in football. I guess that's why they hired a washed up Gene Chizik. "Nothing to see here, NCAA!" He's probably at Keion Joyner's house paying off the family mortgage as we speak.

May I recommend Matt Doherty?

Roy was really fired up in his post game presser today.

He was pissed about UNC's fans not reacting to their first offensive possession where they ran the four corners.

I get his admiration of Dean Smith and respect the gesture, but Phil Ford is old enough to have grandchildren at UNC.

I'm not sure what Roy's expectations were in that moment.

I know Roy has had a tough go of it recently, losing several people that were very close to him, but he needs not to compare Cameron vs UNC to the Smith Center at noon vs a GT squad who is below .500. The Smith Center will be rocking in a couple weeks.

By the way Jeff Mcinnis is also old enough for Phil Ford to have grand kids. You UNC fans should get that.

Ok that last little bit was in poor taste, but sadly true.

Roy also needs to understand that the acoustics of a little 1920s gym don't quite function like those of a modern 22,000 seat arena.

I don't know if a venue known for its "wine and cheese" crowd should be expected to be anything but that for a home game against Georgia Tech, regardless of the circumstances.

And Roy will be convinced it is because of his hissy fit from the postgame PC. This is exactly why I'm so indifferent on him as the coach at UNC. He's a brat.

State fans are talking a lot of smack about the game tonight. They are really wanting this one. Which is cute.

I'm not sure what the outcome of the game will be, although it seems to have stagnated now. Hope that doesn't work out in NC Stupid's favor, which, unfortunately, stagnation would seem to suggest.

Anyhow, the biggest problem I see at the moment with UNC is that they're too fast for their own good. Their full court game has helped them get back into the mix, but it's also cost them 3 or 4 possessions in the second alone.
