For all u so called vols for life, our original jerseys were black. They did not change until around 1915 ( ithink) to Orange. Come on , know your vol history !
Since you insist, let's set the historical record straight. Yes, there was a period in which black jerseys (with orange accents) were worn by the University of Tennessee, but
orange and white have been the OFFICIAL school colors almost from the beginning of our football program.
Tennessee's orange and white colors were selected by Charles Moore, a member of the first football team in 1891. They were later approved by a student body vote (

Here (
University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Uniform and Team History | Heritage Uniforms and Jerseys), in chronological sequence, are fourteen of the uniform combinations worn by Tennessee since the inception of its football program in 1891. Proponents of the all-white look will note that, in 1892, we wore white pants and laced-up jerseys with a simple orange UT lettered across the front. It is difficult to precisely establish the chronological parameters during which black was the primary color of jerseys. This source (
TNJN - Tennessee football uniform history), however, indicates that they were worn from 1911 to 1920, and the aforementioned mural depicts a black jersey with contrasting elbow and shoulder patches and an orange "T" on the chest, which is attributed to 1903.
Historical sources also disagree in terms of precisely when we first began to consistently wear orange jerseys. This document (
TNJN - Tennessee football uniform history), published by the University of Tennessee School of Journalism and Electronic Media, indicates that "In 1927 the Vols decided to correspond more with the school's colors of orange and white and wore the first orange jerseys, and have been wearing them ever since." Perhaps, that statement simply reflects an official declaration of policy, one that validated several prior years of the usage of orange jerseys.
UT's Athletics Department's website (
UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Fans) states, on the other hand, that "Tennessee football players did not wear orange jerseys until the season-opening game in 1922. Coach M.B. Banks' Vols won that game over Emory and Henry by a score of 50-0." Finally, this mural (
University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Uniform and Team History | Heritage Uniforms and Jerseys) depicts an orange jersey with white rectangular panels, which is attributed to 1925.
It is probably safe to say that orange jerseys have been consistently worn since no later than 1927 and were worn, without official sanction, for several years prior to that. In any event, this pushes the span during which orange jerseys have been part of Tennessee's football uniform back to no less than 85 years, and perhaps as much as 91.
That definitely qualifies as longstanding, deeply entrenched tradition, far more so than the short-lived period during which black jerseys were worn.
