Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

And there's a bunch of people who say the same about the football team. Especially since in the last 10 years the most successful sports teams at this university have been the Lady Vols basketball and softball teams.

A "bunch of people"? The support for LV sports pales in comparison to the support for the football program.

I'm not saying it doesn't. But if you don't think 15k people who signed the petition is a bunch of people, I don't know what to tell you.

How many Vol fans do you think there are out there...the overblown Cuonzo "petition" had 35,000 clicks and that was capped at that number. To be fair, I've always felt a large number of rival fans participated in that sham and clicked a number of times. Is this petition a similar click site? 15,000 is a relatively light turnout for such a passionate subject.

According to the article in today's paper, there were 23k total, including 8k online. So that 15k was a hard copy of the petition, not just some click site.

And it's really pathetic when the AD responds to someone with "We've improved your seats" instead of actually listening to the concerns. What a wonderful leader this athletic department has.

Compared to the entire Vol fanbase, that's not a lot of people. That's roughly 15% of a typical football home crowd.

To put it another way, a whole lot more people probably feel like Brave Volunteer than feel like the people you describe.

I don't give a damn about the NBA,but do I chime in when something demanding changes? No. So why should those that don't care about the women's athletics get a say in what goes on there? They shouldn't.

If you leave the Lady Vol name, you're sexist; if you change it to match the men's, you're "a terrible Athletic Director". I do not envy Dave Hart in this matter.

I think making the sports have the same nickname/logo but leaving women's hoops in honor of Pat was the correct course of action.

Maybe let the women seek their own apparel deal? Would be difficult without a women's AD, but if they didn't use university money to finance scholarships, uniforms, travel, coaches salaries, training expenses, medical and other minor incidentals, they could do their own thing?

I agree. Throughout scholastic sports at any level, giving women's athletic teams a separate name by adding "Lady" or the awful suffix -ettes has always carried a diminishing and patronizing connotation. I'm completely in favor of removing those distinctions, although I understand the players' perception that it's an attack on their identity. That said, the Lady Vols basketball team under Coach Summit stands in a unique position as a standard-bearer and symbol of excellence in defiance of those connotations, and keeping the separate name honors that achievement.

I'd be willing to bet he's responding that way because that's all he can do, as he probably has exactly zero say on the matter. I'm not sure how anyone who has even a basic knowledge of how Nike does business with the apparel contracts could possibly be surprised by how this is playing out. In exchange for the "privilege" of Nike supplying your uniforms, they get almost complete control over all the apparel the school wears, and tell anybody who doesn't like it to just go to hell. I don't really care one way or the other about this Lady Vols issue, but I'm sure there is going to be some strong arming with the FB uniforms at some point that a lot of people are going to hate. That's the main reason I was opposed to the switch to Nike in the first place.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Are you willing to sit by and let Hart n nike do this we found several emails that Nike told hart to keep this information secret fearing a backlash from the fans. Please read my post about war nike n Hart is taking away. Volunteers smokey, Davey Crockett , and checkerboard , and only using the so call Power T on shirts, hats, anything that was our Tradition. Nike told hart to keep this info secret from the fans, was afraid of backlash from fans. My question to all fans of all Tennessee sports, are you going to sit back and let nike n Hart destroy our university , and our tradition. We have copies of these emails on the Save the Lady Vols site . Please get the word out about Hart n Nike

This also can't be surprising to anyone who read the original article that detailed how Nike did away with all the alternate logos at Duke, Arizona St and Oregon St.

These are not rumors . We have the emails from Nike posted on Save the Lady Vols page, and this was on TV talk show this morning .find their page and read for yourself. This is why we have exactly the same form letter sent from a 3 of the minions at UT. Please do the research, I would love nothing better than for all, to find this out instead of blindly following Dave Hart and drink Nike Kool aid

So was it always going to be a secret? Because there would be a ****load of backlash after the release regardless of whether or not it was kept a secret.
