Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

What evidence do you have that they have even tried at all? You act like this is rocket science or something. Even Lowe's can match a paint color to any type of material you can walk in there with.

My evidence comes from Deerpark who pretty well explained it in this thread already. He's inside the program so I'll just take his word for it.

It's not about matching the shade, that's easy.

It's about matching how the shade appears on different materials. Then, coming up with a way for those materials to appear to be the same color under different lights. A helmet (or jerseys, or pants, or jackets, or t-shirts) may all be coated in he same color, but once you put them under direct sunlight, every surface will appear slightly different.

Now, every school and professional team has this problem, but most colors are dark enough that it's too slight of a difference for most people to notice. With how light our orange is, any reaction to bright lights stands out.
Uh, if they did orange helmets on white uni I fail to see his it would be a problem.
Clemson has managed for years. This is the biggest bunch of poppycock I've heard. (Not directed at you)
It's only when the two different materials are side by side that you really notice shading issues.

Pretty sure everyone would agree with this. It's the orange on orange that is at issue.

What you're all forgetting is that nearly every orange helmet that's ever existed looks absolutely terrible, color matching or not.

Clemson Orange is Much darker than UT Orange. That s probably the difference. But, from that picture the helmet, jersey, and pants are slightly off too.

Yea but at the same time...the white on Carolinas helmet doesn't exactly match the white on their jerseys. I don't think things will always match perfectly, and that doesn't bother me.

Most can if you ask them to. Some are not as good as others.

Actually they have a display that allows you to see what paint will look like in different types of light. Exact same thing is being explained with respect to uniforms

And yet we hear no orange alt helmet because of color match. If the alt helmet were on the white jersey, or all white, it's a moot point.

What's the reason for wanting an Orange helmet? UT's white helmet with the Power T is an icon and one of the most recognized in all of sports.

You see a white helmet with an Orange Power T, you automatically think TENNESSEE FOOTBALL. If it ain't broke why would you want to try and fix it?

We all saw what terrible monstrosity happened when Nebraska brought out a helmet other than their perfect white ones. It sucked.

Nothing is broken. That doesn't mean an image negative would be bad or anti-tradition. Keep in mind that people said the same thing when they added the "T" to the head gear, changed the T, widened the helmet stripe, etc. The mock ups I've seen of an orange helmet are sharp, IMO. You still have the power T, just with reversed color scheme.

If done right a metallic orange helmet would look cool...and I like things that look cool. :rock2:

I think the baseball team is a good thing to look at if you want to see the problems with trying to match orange on helmets and uniforms. They've had an orange helmet and it looked terrible, and their uniforms have been a mess because the oranges haven't matched (and I'm not counting the Astros version, that is done on purpose).

Their uniforms looked like an old Houston Astros abortion.

This exactly what I'm talking about. If it ain't broke then don't try and fix it.

Possibly, and that should be considered, but it must be done professionally, and could be used as an alternate helmet. i really did like the helmets used by the U last season.

I think what a lot of people are ignoring is the fact that helmets are expensive. An alternate helmet that would be used for one game is probably a waste of money in the eyes of the AD; especially when you have to come up with additional funds to research and create a matching color. All for one game a year. It may be possible, but it's not practical.

Reminds me of the font you might see on move poster for some comically bad robot flick. Nike getting out of the gates with a clunker.

Eh. I typically wouldn't like this sort of design but like I said, the fact that they seem to have designed it so that the letters with horizontal tops look like the state is cool enough that it gets a pass from me.

Then use it for four! And pass the savings on to us!

Using the picture from the basketball court I think the full wordmark will look something like this. I didn't put enough spacing between the letters, but general idea.

That's horrible.

Edit:

Not your work, but the idea of "Tennessee" looking like that.
