Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

I think what a lot of people are ignoring is the fact that helmets are expensive. An alternate helmet that would be used for one game is probably a waste of money in the eyes of the AD; especially when you have to come up with additional funds to research and create a matching color. All for one game a year. It may be possible, but it's not practical.

Nike will provide.

This exactly what I'm talking about. If it ain't broke then don't try and fix it.

Not trying to "fix" anything. There's nothing wrong with our uniforms either, yet we have an alt gray. That's the the point here.... What do we do for an alt helmet. I think the Orange would definitely be the best way to go.

In today's environment, young kids, both fans and recruits like a little pizzazz and it makes things exciting. We're not Penn State and that kind of uniform is so boring. There's nothing wrong with a little flash once in a while.

Tennessee's contract with Nike does not include helmets. If UT wanted to do an alternate helmet, Nike would design it, but it would be Tennessee's responsibility to cover the cost of purchasing them.

The helmets range from $350-600 each, depending on size and the finish applied. You need about 125 of them, so $45-75,000.

Fair enough but it would be well worth it. Sounds like a pretty small cost for excitement it would add. Do it for a otherwise sparsely attended game like Western Carolina or North Texas and it would fill enough seats to pay for it easily.

I have season tickets but am probably not going to those games. If an alt helmet were announced, I would want to be there to see what it looked like.

That would be some serious coin just to aggravate half the fan base

Why is UTAD so cheap?! Look at how many other schools have alternate helmets!

DP is right about price, though. I would bet our helmets now cost around 10k based upon this article. But once high gloss and chrome finishes come into the picture things get expensive. Here is a great article about it.

I highly doubt they would do it at a game such as these. It would be a big game.

There's no way that 50k+ for a one-off alternate helmet is a good use of the AD's limited resources. At least with an alternate jersey you can generate some revenue by selling replicas to the fans. No such possibility with helmets.

Does anyone have an idea if Nike covers the cost for other school's helmets? I think UT State has 2 or 3 different styles. I bet if Nike pays for the helmets you may get stuck with something like Georgia had a
couple of years ago. Yikes!

Even TENNESSEE TECH has 2 different helmets.

If UTAD is going to be fashionistas about orange matching perfectly at least give us a smokey gray or chrome helmet once or twice a year.

Our athletics dept. is so cheap. I'm done with UTAD.

Oh I'm sure the A.D. finds far more ludicrous things to blow money on than helmets for the team that makes the money.

Like someone else posted earlier, making any sort of headway towards finishing the stadium renovation that got 1/3 of the way done before they ran out of money seems like a much better place to be spending money than 100 helmets that are going to get used for about three hours one Saturday.
