Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

Do you know why

Yes. The rule was changed to require all numbers to be solid and a different color from the jersey because of how hard to read some of the gradient and camouflage numbers were.

The rule also requires the number itself to be a different color than the jersey, which means numbers like these:

are no longer allowed in football.

Interesting. Thanks, DP.

I've got another mockup here, something similar to what I think adidas would actually do.

And an orange helmet. Even though I don't like orange helmets, I think this would look alright in person in matte orange. I'm a sucker for the matte look.

Orange helmets aren't something you should expect to see. Nearly impossible to match the orange so it shows up properly, especially next to the jersey. Clemson has the same problem with their orange helmet and our lighter shade is even more of a problem.

People complain about the T and stripe not matching the jersey under certain lights, but they match perfectly laid next to each other. Make that small decal the entire helmet and it's really not worth the hassle of listening to people whine.

HGI, which is the helmet graphics company responsible for virtually every cool and intricate helmet design the last 10 years, has sent samples in the past and there's really nothing that is close enough under the lights.

The baseball team had matte orange helmets for two seasons. They started out the year close color-wise, but looked WAY off in certain lights and faded almost immediately from dirt and light. They were comically different orange from the jerseys by the halfway point of the season.

That's been my beef with orange helmets for a while. They just look like crap. Virginia Tech's worn them a few times and they look awful. I just thought I'd make a concept one since a lot of people like the orange helmet.

The concepts have always looked great. But in execution, they just don't work well, like you said.

Virginia and Virginia Tech have both rolled one out and it's looked awful. Florida's works great with the blue and white jerseys, but they're going to start wearing a white or blue helmet with their orange jerseys.

Good show. I hope you don't mind but I added these to the facebook page for my blog.

If you mind, I will gladly take them down.

Another thought: the stripe on the helmet appears to be between 30-50% too narrow. I am nitpicking but I get like this when we are this close, and this far away, from kickoff.

Very nice.

Now that, with the asymmetrical helmet...perhaps with charcoal numerals trimmed in Orange, or orange trimmed with charcoal for the helmet #s...would be pretty damn slick.

And thank you for putting the adidas trefoil on there...small detail that I appreciate. As DP said...best concept yet.

Might want to submit to the UniWatch blog.

No problem.

This is what I imagine a full uniform would look like with these (the pants stripes are weird because I did them late last night, but you all get the idea):

I've quit reading UniWatch regularly because I'm tired of his endless *****ing about indian and indian related logos and names.

Clemson is the team that comes to mind when I hear people get excited for orange UT helmets. I think it's a cool concept but would probably look awful in execution. I wouldn't mind seeing it maybe one time just for kicks, but like you said, if people complained about the orange in the current helmets "not matching", they'd have a seizure at an orange helmet.

I definitely tune him out when he goes on his rants. I'm not saying the topic isn't worthy of discussion, but he's as subtle as a sledgehammer.

I'm just sick of it because that particular population of people has way more severe issues than whether or not a sports team is using a slightly offensive name. He's white-knighting over something that should be pretty low on the list of "things native Americans worry about".

I've done some mission work on reservations, and I can tell you that the people I've encountered don't really give two sh*ts about the Washington Redskins using that name.

Topic for another thread, but that discussion isn't going away. I agree he's a little too focused on it, but that discussion is the biggest topic going in the sports branding world right now and will be until the NFL makes them change the name.
