I still don't get why everyone gets so defensive when someone mentions special uniforms or a gray, black, orange helmet or jersey or pants.
Were not talking about whole sale permanent changes but something that would be wore once or twice a year.
Our uniforms back in early days of the program had the colors of black, orange and tan. Every twenty or so years Tennessee uniforms have had subtle changes from the color orange to the changes in the size of the stripes on the helmet to the adding and then changing the design & size of the "T" to pants with orange or white stripes to one big orange or white stripe to plain white pants and back again. Then the reintroduction of orange road game pants to the adding of black around the road uniform numbers & players names. Not to mention the sizes of numbers on the uniforms.
There will always be slight changes and its up to Tennessee not to fall behind when it comes to specialized unforms. We may not see it at our age but to most of those 17-21 year old kids they see these other schools coming out with these special uniforms gloves shoes etc.. and think why can't we get those!

Part of the problem is that there are so few games that make up the football season. Wearing an alternate twice a year would comprise nearly 20% of the season. Also, part of my objection is of the "give an inch, take a mile" variety. At first it might just be once a year, but then it could gradually get more common until eventually we might end up being one of those jackass teams that wears something different every week. I'd just rather never even start down that road.
Also, not just for UT, but the whole alternate uniform thing is seriously starting to get out of hand. Teams are coming farther and farther out of left field with some of these designs. I've watched college football all my life, and it's getting to a point where if I turn on a random game, I can't even always immediately identify which teams are playing without by their uniforms which is ridiculous. I know this will never happen, but I'd honestly like to see the NCAA, or the conferences, mandate that teams have one helmet, two jerseys and two sets of pants approved prior to the season, and they can mix and match from that set, but no more. Even within those parameters, you can still get 4 distinct combinations, which to me is plenty.
why do you even care what uniforms other teams are wearing? there are tons more things in and around college football that are worth being concerned about.
i wonder who actually started the alt uni trend. maybe the d cowboys in the mid 90s with the star shouldered jerseys?I don't especially, its just something that started out as an annoyance and has now almost reached an epidemic state. When someone like myself who has been watching college football religiously for 20+ years can turn on a game and not even recognize a team like Ohio St, Notre Dame or Florida from the moment I turn the game on because their uniforms are so far out in left field, then IMO things have gotten a little out of hand.
