I would imagine that DP will say that there are no major changes because the uniforms were already ordered way back. I’m curious if the new staff will do any drastic changes by next season.
This is pretty much the gist of it, the uniforms are finalized in January, so I don't expect any changes to the standard home and away for this season.
Before the pandemic, UT was supposed to participate in a Nike throwback program on rivalry weekend in 2020, but Nike cancelled that uniform line when the pandemic disrupted their supply chain. Some of the sideline gear came out for a few teams anyway, but not for most. I've heard nothing to suggest this will happen in 2021. I have no idea what the throwback would have been, but I had heard that those matchups were going to be color-on-color and with the opponent having been Vanderbilt, I assume it would have been a traditional orange jersey.
Black jerseys were designed and approved for the 2021 season, but I think that order was cancelled in the coaching change. I know Heupel very much likes the Smokey Grey design that was worn 2015-17, but a set of those has not been manufactured since 2017. I'm not sure they have enough old supply on hand to do those and they definitely have not ordered matching helmets at this point.
I'm interested to see what happens beyond this year. They didn't do a ton of alternate stuff at UCF, black was already their standard. They had a light gray one season and then did home and road versions of their "space" alternates the last couple of years. They had black, white and gold helmets there.
As I've said for years, an orange helmet at some point would surprise me simply because of the difficulty in getting an orange helmet color and finish that will match the jerseys under stadium lights and on TV. Believe me, Nike and adidas have both tried over the years, working extensively on samples with helmet manufacturers as well as the Hydrographics company that has done a lot of the more innovative wrap designs over the last decade or so. It could happen at some point, but that's the reason Nike has never pushed an orange helmet design.
