Update on Nichols and offer to Alec Peters

I agree it is not of monumental importance who the fifth guy is if you get Nichols. My preference would another big man that could contribute a little bit if Yemi is the only true center coming back because of his potential foul problems.

I know people throw around the top 150 but that is a pretty meaningless number. There are mistakes made in guys rated in the top twenty but I'd take a Hubbs, Tobias type every year and get all no names rather than get three or four guys that make someone's top 150 list. There are lot of people with similar skills as you get out of the top fifty or top seventy five. You see that reflected games involving mid majors. Take the stars away and a couple of bigs and their top guys are not much different from plenty of guys on SEC rosters.

Kentucky has done really well with 3-4 top players each year. So have Kansas, UCONN, UNC, Duke, etc. There are few teams that are highly successful building a team the way you suggested. I realize you need a blend of stars and role players for chemistry sake, but suggesting that one stud player and 3-4 MEAC level players (In terms of offers) will make for a competitive team at the highest level is a little naive. CCM would need to be the greatest talent evaluator of all time to consistently build winners using that method.

Not calling you out, but that idea seems counterintuitive to the methods of every college coach in existence. Welcome to the board and post often.

Bingo.

And seeing as how CCM is a big 10 guy, who was a big wing who could shoot and was a fundamental guy, you can see why he's attracted to Peters.

As long as we get Nichols I really don't give a sh*t who the 5th is, but Peters would be a nice fit.

I agree BTO, Robbie Hummel worked out pretty well for Purdue.

And you know who recruited Hummel....Cuonzo Martin.

Oh I know, season ticket holder. But Zo gets more credit for recruiting E'twaun Moore and JuJuan Johnson, and they worked out well too. Should point out that Moore, Johnson, Hummel and Martin (transferred to Notre Dame) were all freshman when Painter took over, they laid the ground work on them from the start. Purdue recruiting hasn't been as good since Zo and Rick Ray left.

Two things -

- Robbie Hummel was a top 75 4 star, not under the radar.

- wrt Peters, Rob Lewis is reporting this morning that the reports of a scholarship offer from TN were bad info. No offer yet. Offer not anticipated.

Ideally you get the best group of players you can and the odds are strong you don't end up with a top fifteen guy and three guys not recruited by many if any majors very often.

My point made poorly is that a lot of teams that are good mid majors(not Meac)have players as good or better than some guys we have recruited . I was emphasing the importance of a few top guys as opposed to feeling great about getting two or three people ranked toward the bottom of the top 150.

I thought your response was very civil and I appreciate the welcome. I have trolled for a while and think this site has the best recruiting info and appears to be a place for good discussion.

I agree there are mid-majors with really good players, some better than what UT currently has rostered. Guys fall through the cracks all the time, be it for academic reasons, lack of exposure, or otherwise. Targeting these guys is very difficult though, and employing this method as the norm in lieu of targeting the consensus top players is likely to lead to more busts than booms. Unless, of course, as i said, CCM is the greatest talent evaluator of all time.

I think we agree that he should target the best while evaluating potential diamonds in the rough as backup plans, and hoping you happen to find the next JaJuan Smith, Jimmer Fredette, or Doug McDermott. There are just too many Wes Washpun's, Damien Harris', and Tony Passley's out there to strike gold more often than not.
