(Updated 7/13) 2021 MLB Draft and Roster Management Discussion Thread

As OT and I have pointed out, a stelllar college year next year gives him plenty of leverage in the 22 draft. Supply vs demand. A great pitcher is a rare commodity.

That’s not really how it works though. Sure he will have leverage to get picked at a good position, but then the team who picks him can lowball the hell out of his offer because he has nowhere else to go. It’s all about money not about draft position.

Also do not think it’s coincidence he got picked by his hometown team.

its been done before, Independent Ball for a year........

I think Leath and Hunley will both leave. I believe Leath is a little older and seems logical to move on. Especially to his hometown team that helped him through his hamstring injury this year. I think the same of Hunley. He has been here with Vitello from day one. Came in the same year. He has had one of the most productive and successful pitching careers at UT in many years if you look at the numbers. This year especially. Not sure what else he can accomplish here. Plus, the Rays organization is known for their pitcher development. Just makes sense to me.

one thing CTV mentioned in one of his interviews yesterday is that Leath will need to pass a physical and he's had a couple of things pop up lately. CTV never discussed anything further.

Yes, I recall that as well. Gonna be interesting that’s for sure.

Just checked the D1 baseball transfer tracker and discovered that Connor Housely found a landing place. He’s headed to Kennesaw State.
Good for him. Kennesaw State’s program is a diamond in the rough! With the right coach, they could be a force every year with all the talent in the state.

So why would he go pro? I know about "bargaining position," but it doesn't get any worse than undrafted free agent.
For him, it may be that he’s decided he’s done with UK (I’d venture to guess he has his degree at this point), and the decision he’s weighing is rather he wants to start over at a new school in hopes of generating more draft interest or just start pursuing a professional career. He may just decide he’s done with school, altogether.

*nods* That's understandable. Regardless of what his decision is, Tennessee is still looking in the transfer portal for a veteran catcher.

This is what no leverage looks like...
@CarlosACollazo: The #Cubs also signed 6th round LHP Riley Martin for $1,000. Slot value for the 184th pick is $263,700. A $262,700 under slot deal.

Yep...several other examples of this, too (see his Twitter account), but this is far and away the most extreme.

@preacherman20 , your thoughts?

Based on conversations I had with an advisor/agent that I’ve known for years, there were many guys accepting low signing bonuses in rounds 6-10. He said it was insane. Lots of nerves due to the amount of talent in the draft. So kids were pulling the trigger on offers. Once that precedent was set, it continued for much of the remaining draft.

But was he really a 6th round pick, I doubt it. They cut a deal with a 20th round selection and picked him higher to save money for other picks….
