(Updated 8/2/23) 2023 MLB Draft and Roster Management Discussion Thread

Most college guys don’t need an agent? To negotiate six/seven figure deals? What am I missing here…?

only the top guys get that much and yea those need agents. Remember most guys get much less and they don’t need one. Heck the LSU guy got 20k the other day.

It’s not as much negotiating the signing bonus, but strategy to play one team against another (w/o identifying team by name) on draft day.

Also, knowing stuff like getting more $ on the 3rd day vs, the 2nd because of the tax advantages for the teams. Then the million questions that come once the player is in the minors. And understanding early arbitration, contract negotiations, etc. Helping the player navigate injury schedules, get baseball card deals, glove deals, etc.

I’d say players earning under 100k on the signing bonus don’t need an Agent until they start making progress in the minors. Reason? Most likely Only 1 teams drafting them. Agents get 5% and if someone wants 6%, run from that agent.

All that said, imagine a mom or dad trying to do all that. Especially when they probably have jobs.

The potential overslot picks in that situation generally have told all teams that they will go to college and won't sign a contract. So, teams won't draft them in the earlier rounds, due to the risk that they won't sign. But in those late rounds, teams might draft them and offer a whole lot of money in hope that it changes the player's mind. The difference with the late round picks is that there is no penalty (like losing pool amount) if they fail to sign the player.

Zander received a call from the Nationals for early Round 11. Offered $150,000. Z declined the offer. Wants to come back for his senior year, put more work in with Frank, etc. and contribute to getting this team to Omaha 🧡⚾🍊

If true, IMO, Zander should have taken the Nationals offer.

True and the decision was Zander's.

As it always is the players decision. From a pure baseball standpoint, he would be best off in the hands of a MLB pitching coach as opposed to Frank. However, the best thing is that it looks like he's a Senior from an academic standpoint. Getting your degree is key. If you can walk away with that, SEC playing experience, and a crack at the majors (which he'll get again)....then all is great.

Mlb pitching coach ?

he’d likely never see him.

also the milb is full of former college pitching coaches. It’s unlikely he’d get better coaching

You realize MLB teams try to hire frank every single year right?

Hate to burst your bubble but Frank is at the end of his career. If you think he’s out there developing pitchers like he did 20 years ago, you are mistaken. At this point, Frank is more about strategy, philosophy, and scouting.

And yet Zander values Frank's mentorship enough to come back for his senior season.....

You really are a bit of a jackass when it comes to our coaches. You're worse than Bruin in some respects, and that's saying something.

Hate to burst your bubble but you’re one of the most negative posters on this board for no reason. And if you don’t think Frank is still developing I’m not sure what to tell you. He literally just got done turning a transfer from Georgia southern into a top 10 pick

And Andrew Lindsey into a 5th Round Pick. Charlotte pitcher who skipped a year

FA does a great job

anyone that thinks minor league coaching would be better doesn’t understand the minor leagues and how it works. It’s really not close

100% accurate. There are a few orgs that are better than others, but there isnt as much development in the minors as people think.

Even the good ones have big issues with having all their staffers on the same page. The milb pitching coordinator may be great but he’s only seeing those guys every once in awhile. It’s a bad system honestly: it’s why they are hiring college guys everyday

I know it’s hard to hear things that contradict what you want to believe and think. I don’t mind checking out though. I mostly shared my experiences with the program as opposed to my opinions.

I also stuck up for Chase Burns when so many torched him and other guys that hit the portal. Again, unpopular. I went against the grain.

Weird, as it seems Zander's choice directly contradicts the BS you're trying to peddle as your "experience". I have no idea if you actually have experience with this staff or not, nor do I really care. What I do know is guys that I KNOW FOR CERTAIN that have played for this staff have an opposite opinion of yours. So I'm sorry if that's hard for you to hear, but I do believe I'm gonna take their word over yours.
