(Updated 8/2/23) 2023 MLB Draft and Roster Management Discussion Thread

Zach Joyce is signing with the Angels.

Vitello missed out on this kid. Threw 10 innings in 2023 at UT and signed for 150k with the Angels and is already in Single A. First Vol out of the '23 Vol Draft class to Single A.

Oops....

Do you understand his history and timeline? Do you understand he was returning from TJS? Pretty sure neither Vitello nor Anderson missed out on anything. I think they were able to facilitate Zach’s return to a baseball career. Jeesh….

I hope you missed out on the instructions for sarcastic thoughts to be in blue font with your comments about TV and Zach Joyce for 2023.

Otherwise, this appears to be one of your most knowledgable and insightful takes on the season.

And he was hurt half the season……….remember when everyone thought he injured his arm again during a game and was going to need TJ again?

Knoxville News Sentinel April 18, 2023
"Zach Joyce left Tennessee baseball's game against Tennessee Tech with an injury in the sixth inning.
The junior pitcher was examining his right elbow after he hit Tennessee Tech's Peyton Mills with a 95-mph fastball. Joyce was evaluated briefly on the field by trainer Jeff Wood before walking off the field."
"I'll know more specifically tomorrow, but it didn't seem good," Vols coach Tony Vitello said. "He came out and hugged his teammates and they were obviously concerned for him. But that one doesn't look good."

Couldn't help but notice that Zane Denton's entry in the UT campus directory (publicly available) up until this week was listed as: "active, left UT in 5/23" but now that has changed to just "active"
Seems like a really good kid. I'd love to see him light it up and make himself some money.

Someone will be promoted first, someone will be promoted last, and some might not get promoted.

Your post is obviously a swipe at CTV, but it comes off a little bit as a swipe against all the other players who also signed but weren’t as quick to A ball. I don’t recall a Volnation baseball forum post before bragging ‘X was first in his class to A/AA/AAA.’

100% agree. Comparing when one player gets promoted to another is ridiculous. All organizations do it differently. One player can go to AA in one org but if that same player were with a different org they may never get out of low A. So, if he wants to look at it that way, the Angels have one of the weakest and worst farm systems in baseball. So absolutely, someone as talented as Zach should have been promoted. But that can’t be compared to where others are with their respective organizations at the same point in time.

Additionally, I can't ever remember having so many Vols in AA and AAA. He even has 2 guys in the Bigs already.

Yeah I think Vitello was simply managing his future. He got shut down mid season due to discomfort in elbow on top of coming off TJS. If anything, Tony’s management of him got him farther than actually playing him. Just my opinion.

‘Zactly.

In one of Frank’s interviews, he told the story of a coach abusing a player by throwing him too much and another pitching a hurt player. He said I promised myself I will never be that guy. I’ve also heard Tony speak of the same things. I’m sure this resonates in their decision making whether we agree or understand it.

They seem to be exceedingly driven to sculpt players for the next level. We are so fortunate and blessed.

It is weird to keep harping on Zach Joyce because 1) he got hurt and they were protecting him and his future and 2) they had no problem with pitching, especially out of the pen.

Your point might resonate more if they actually struggled with pitching but they didnt
GOBO is just an instigator…

Like last year, I decided to use Google spreadsheets this year to keep track of our draft-eligible players, incoming freshman class /signees, JUCO class, and (outgoing/incoming) transfers. Scroll down, and at the bottom of the spreadsheet, you will see four tabs for the four categories mentioned above. You can toggle back and forth between tabs to see players and their info. If anyone has additional info, please let me know in the replies, and I’ll do my best to update. During the draft, I'll try to update our draftees with round and MLB team.

I'll also update this OP with additional links, articles, and information as they become available. Feel free to post any links or info you find. Thanks everyone!
