Urban Meyer - Lucky or Great coaching?

As much as I hate to say it Urban Meyer is a pretty darn good ball coach. I think someone said well didnt the gators go 8-5,7-5,etc. Well look what happened when Meyer got their. IMO this thread is absolutly rid. but what do I know. Come sept.15 we will find out who is the better team this year!

Yes, it is hard to say but it is the truth.

Urban Meyer is a good coach. An NC is all the proof that you need. That has nothing to do with the fact that the Gators were lucky to beat LSU and SC last year. Fifteen minute monologues on special teams does not change my mind on that fact.

Agreed...The man did a great job with that team last year. Now they only played like the #1 team in the country for 2 games, but it's like the old saying goes: It's not how you start, but how you finish.

A lot of people like to downplay Meyer's coaching job by pointing out that he inherited a tremendous group of talent from Ron Zook...but Roy Williams inherited a spectacular team from Matt Doherty, and no one is questioning his national title. Talent is only a part of the equation...you still need to develop your players, motivate your team, develop a cohesive focus on the team goals, prepare your team to exploit the opposition's weaknesses, etc. - and Meyer seemed to do all those things with his Gators last year.

It's not fun for us to talk about the good fortune of our rivals, but Jamaica and LawGator are always welcome around here. Things would be quite dull if we didn't have guys like you to provide an outside perspective.

Yeah. By the way, how's the weather down there in Jamaica?

Chances are it's beautiful, but I wouldn't know since I've been stuck here in Gainesville for so long. Don't get me wrong, if I have to be in the states, Gainesville is where I want to be, but sooner or later I'm going to have to get back down there for a while. I went to a Caribbean restaurant here in town the other day...ugh...

Actually, you will by and large find the fan base here to be very knowledgeable and intelligent conversationalists. Unfortunately, you jumped in and got yourself entwined with one who can write well, but who seems unwilling to give credit where credit is due. If you go back and peruse 20 posts or so on either side of your argument with what's-his-name, you will find a lot of Tennessee fans on here admitting, albeit grudgingly, that Meyer has turned out to be a better coach than they figured he would be.

I've got almost 5,000 posts on here in the last couple of years and its not because I don't have anythign else to do. Its overall a very fun site with good-natured ribbing. And as I say 95% of the regulars on here are of good character and give and take the abuse with a smile on their faces.

It gets a little weird this time of year and right at the beginning of football season. For obvious reasons, these two times are when you get the lurkers coming around and spouting off whatever they feel the need to say just to say it or just to root for Tennessee, no matter what the cost. You will actually find a few smoledering debates on here of interest, including fire vs. keep Fulmer, the future of Vols basketball, whether we need a playoff to replace the BCS, things of that nature.

Me, I come on here primarily to antagonize a select group of individuals.

Huh...sounds like fun. I moderate some insider boards at Gator Country and every once in a while I just have to take a break and talk to someone who isn't a Gator fan. I was on a Kentucky board for a while, but since they got Gillispie they're no fun anymore. This place does look like fun, so hopefully I'll be able to stick around for a while.

Now if only I was a golfer.

Well welcome to the VN. :hi: It's always good to get another perspective on how things are going.

As for coaches, we have Fulmer, pearl and Summitt (LG's favorite) so it's never boring when discussing them.

I can't believe you just said this guy wears Gator Glasses. First off, Florida just won the national championship. They can praise their coach without sounding the least bit delusional. Secondly, you just praised UT's special teams. If you honestly think UT special teams are good, you need to either remove your orange sunglasses or go pick up Football for Dummies and hit yourself in the face with it.

If you're going to bash my post, atleast the all the prior posts in the thread.

I have no issue or problem with him praising his coach. But, him trying to praise his "genius muff-punt recover schemes" was delusional. I just had a problem with him saying his biased opinion should matter as much as someone else's just because it was coming from a non-UT fan. Now if an LSU fan or something came in here and praised his magnificant special teams then I would see it a different way.

As for the UT special teams remark, I do not blame you...

I *never* said UT's special teams was great or even good... I said there are **times** when we are able to make it to the returner and he may muff it but recovers it... everyone has occasions where they reach the returner before he receives the ball... don't jump to the conclusion that I was commending our SP play.

Well, thanks for not reading my posts either.

I am not an Urban Meyer basher and have given credit to him many times. But I believe and will always believe its ridiculous jamaicagator was praising his "muff-punt schemes." Urban Meyer is obviously a great coach and recruiter. He is also lucky. I was the first(or one of the first) to point out you need some luck to win a N.C. like UT in 98'. Stop try to make me look like the bad guy here when I wasn't the one attempting to bash or offend anyone here first.

The topic of this post is whether he is a great coach or he is lucky. I expressed my opinion on it and then got flamed by your friend here.

As for Jamaicagator, I never said UT's special teams was great or even decent as in my previous post, but UT (along with every single football team in America) has managed to get to the punt returner *many* times resulting in a fair catch most of the time. UT's returns/coverages is horrible... but that doesn't influence the way the ball bounces on a muffed punt for UT or any team.

Coaches can't teach muffed punts. Got it:good!:

Agreed. But jamaicagator believes he uses a special algebraic formula to calculate the bounce on any given instance.

Sorry^ that was a joke, just had to make sure I don't get another essay written to me for questioning Urban Almighty.

Coaching at Florida = nationally renouned
Special Teams play at Florida = exceptional
Coaching at Tennessee = national joke
Special Teams at Tennessee = pathetic

There's a correlation. You should be able to see that. Good coaching leads to good special teams play. Frank Beamer has good special teams every year. That's not the result of great luck.

Are we gonna talk about the Urban Cowboy being lucky or not or are we gonna talk about golf? Wait a minute, golf is lucky!!!! :birgits_giggle:

I think it's the goiter.
