Meyer has been to the hospital at least twice since suffering chest pains after the SEC title game, a Florida source told ESPN. The heart problems are stress related, not congenital, a source close to the situation told ESPN.
he'd still be an egomaniac, but i would respect the honesty.
seriously. somebody can be a scumbag (not saying meyer is) but somebody who is a scumbag and is a standup guy about it is much better than one who is a scumbag and tries to lie about it.
Meyer is a great football coach and no more an ego-maniac than Pete Carrol, Nick Saban or our own li'l Lane It goes with the territory and it does look like he is doing this in a way that minimizes the impact on the Gators; it is the dead period in recruiting and he is staying on IMO to act as the recruiting coodinator until they get another HC. Who knows this may go like Coach K at Duke and Meyer may be back in a year or so. But bottom line is if the Gators are NC contenders next year he finds a way to stay.
Where does the faith comment come in to play?

he would be thought of as an even bigger liar than saban if he did that.
He painted himself into a corner during the ND rumors. This is a way for him to get out of Gainesville without looking like a liar. I hope everything is ok with him in his professional, and personal life. I wish no ill on the man... I just think that this could be a way for him to save face while sneaking off to the NFL.

I think this is all about the stress of the job causing his health issues. It is being reported now by the media. Meyer has been on top for the last 3 years, but this year has taken taken it's toll. Tebow is leaving along with the other Seniors and possibly 6 to 10 Juniors leaving early for the NFL. Then you have the situations with the Spikes eye goughing, Carlos Dunlap arrest, the SEC fine for talking about the officials, Tebows concussion, and Kiffin speaking out about UF in the media. Some coaches can handle all the distractions and he obviously doesn't want to deal with it any longer.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida football coach Urban Meyer has stepped down, citing health concerns. Meyer will coach the Gators for the final time in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on Jan. 1.
"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer, 45, said in a release. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.
"After consulting with my family, [Florida president Bernie] Machen, [athletic director] Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family."
In five seasons at Florida, Meyer has a 56-10 record. He led the Gators to SEC and national titles in 2006 and 2008. Meyer came to Florida following successful runs at Bowling Green and Utah. In 2004, Meyer's undefeated Utah team became the first from outside the six automatic qualifying conferences to earn a BCS bowl berth.
Meyer was hospitalized Dec. 6, the day after Florida's loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game. He told The Gainesville Sun he had suffered chest pains before going to the hospital.
"Coach Meyer and I have talked this through and I realize how hard this was for him to reach this decision," Foley said in the release. "But, the bottom line is that Coach Meyer needed to make a choice that is in the best interest of his well being and his family. I certainly appreciate what he has meant to the University of Florida, our football program and the Gator Nation. I have never seen anyone more committed to his players, his family and his program. Above all, I appreciate our friendship."
