one of my friends who was deployed this summer posted on facebook that it was the worst day at work ever and we'd see it on the news tomorrow (today). He said he saw it happen on a video feed.

Fastest straight line helicopter in the inventory. It's a function of rotor blade length and horsepower.

It's two palm trees f'ing a dumpster. Don't try to class it up.

Rest easy gentlemen.

Just a part of the business. Helicopters have to hide because they're easy targets if you can find them. They need trees for cover enroute.

You're the expert. I trust your analysis. Thanks for the insight.

God bless these families. Nothing but respect for these special forces warriors. Thanks for all those guys do and for their sacrifices.

It's being reported that 22 of them were Navy Seals and possibly from the same unit that took out OBL but weren't the same men. They were returning from a rescue mission. Very sad, God bless them.

From what I'm reading they weren't an actual part of the raid, but that doesn't matter. It's really too bad. RIP.

In some ways, I guess it is a testament to our planning and aviating that this doesn't happen more often considering the sheer number of missions they are running. Sad news.

Damn that's a big target. Sounds like either bad planning or a surprise insurgent attack. Surely the military doesn't commonly put the best of the best in a large group, and send them on a mission in that airbus?

Fairly large, but not much larger than any of our other airframes, save the OH-58. That RPG would have destroyed our MH-60s as well.

As TennTradition noted, our optempo has been enormous and we've lost very few aircraft, especially for such a crappy place to fly. Good friend of mine died in a 160th raid in Afghanistan as well, but it wasn't about the size of the airframe. There are just times where all the planning, SEAD packages, guile and technology just aren't enough. It's a deadly business, for the good and the bad guys.

Just reported that it was Seal Team 6 that was involved. None of those killed were involved in the OBL raid.

It's being reported that Aaron Carson Vaughn was one of the members of the Seal team who was killed in the crash. He was a Tenn native. He returned to to action just 6 weeks ago, 2 weeks after his 2 month old daughter was born. Very sad....

Maybe they should of had a couple of Apache escorts to provide cover?

160th doesn't do 64s. They fly modded 60s that are badass and OH-6 with mini-guns and stingers.

Honestly, their missions are intended to be small, fast and quiet. Adding escorts doesn't suit any of those.

These are the wages of war. God bless you, gentlemen, for the service you have done for our country, and for paying the ultimate price. Rest in peace.

Gonna be raising a pint to these guys at the bar tonight.

Hey Skip, my question is this....on a quick hitter mission like the boys on board do, why not load 4 sticks on Blackhawks than put our best and bravest eggs in one proverbial basket?

If indeed the S3 believes in the mission>men>me mantra.

A great friend, retired E9, was an ARP in the Blackhorse and 101 in Vietnam, is pissed that they still use that bird to deliver boys to places that bird shouldn't be.

They are intended to be fast, but I mentioned because it was a rescue mission to help outnumbered personnel in a fierce firefight. I figured they might of added some fire support from the skies. I know they fly the Chinooks all the time for missions, but it seems like a terrible idea for a Chinook to go at it alone into a hot area.
