but our modern, twin engine aircraft have very little problem with limited power, even at unfavorable density altitudes.

In several of the books I have read, the authors and interviewees insinuated that the heading into Afghanistan through some of the Northern passes early in the war (from Uzbekistan/Tajikistan) put some serious strain on the aircraft. They implied with that strain, the weather had to be just right. But, that is from my research, not actual experience - so I'll yield to you on it.

It happens, but it's a combination of high temp and some seriously gusty winds through those mountain passes. I suppose if you're regularly rolling up to max payload type of weights, then you're straining the machine, but it's made for it. The biggest risk in my mind would be loss of tail rotor authority in coming to a hover in the mountain passes with the wind coming from the wrong direction.

Another Chinook went down this morning in theatre. Crash landed due to "mechanical failure". Thankfully, no one was killed. The Chinook was a NATO bird.

they're saying now that the remains are so disfigured that they are unidentifiable. Sad

There is speculation that Iran is supplying hi-tech assistance to the Taliban, night vission etc.

It's is pretty much a given than Iranian built ied devices have been used in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

We did the same for the Mujahideen during the 70s & 80s, its just the nature of the beast.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Proxy wars are quite common.

My guess is their other other neighbor is using the money we gave them.

Seems as though it was a trap set by Taliban leaders

U.S. Helo Crashed in Taliban Trap: Afghan Official - Defense News

The Taliban lured U.S. forces into an elaborate trap to shoot down their helicopter, killing 30 American troops in the deadliest such incident of the war, an Afghan official said Aug. 8.

The senior Afghan government official told AFP on condition of anonymity that Taliban commander Qari Tahir lured U.S. forces to the scene by tipping them off that a Taliban meeting was taking place.
He also said four Pakistanis helped Tahir carry out the strike.
"Now it's confirmed that the helicopter was shot down and it was a trap that was set by a Taliban commander," said the official, citing intelligence gathered from the area.

"That's the only route, so they took position on the either side of the valley on mountains and as the helicopter approached, they attacked it with rockets and other modern weapons. It was brought down by multiple shots."

yep. No way with that location there wasn't Pakistani presence. I guarantee it's not over yet either.

I would not be opposed to turning that country into a parking lot.

Or when our kids look at a map in elementary school they can refer to that black expanse as "what used to be Pakistan."

I've often advocated that we should start shifting our support to India but it just hasn't been implemented.

Of course it hasn't. It makes sense. Our policies don't get in the habit of making sense.

Even if Pakistan is stabbing us in the back in Afghanistan, keeping a facade of diplomacy at least allows us to keep operatives on the ground more easily. They may be an obstacle in some ways, but its better than being effectively taken out of the game.
