USA! USA! Chant Deemed Racist

In context, pretty obvious this is antagonizing Hispanics on opposing team.

Not sure I think it complaint worthy, but I agree they should apologize for it.

As reported, it was clearly racist.

Also, I can confirm now that this story is why Fox, and by extension GOP, is losing ground with Hispanic voters.

Everything you say astounds me.

Television station KSAT said the students who chanted “USA USA” were banned from the state title games and will be forced to apologize.

I especially loved that part of the article. Are they going to hold them at gun point and force them to apologize?? Ridiculous.

You mean fans of a winning team taunted the losing team? Unheard of in this culture, other than the times when millions of fans all across the country do it every year.

Racist probably isn't the right word, but the motives were definitely to embarrass the other team.
We got in trouble for chanting crackhead uncle to Darrel strawberrys nephew when I was in high school.

What possible purpose did the students have for their chant? I have trouble coming up with a reason that does not involve trying to be hurtful to the other team. I don't know about you, but my daddy raised me better than that.

Forced apologies are pointless. An apology is only as meaningful as it is sincere.

The kids and their parents should be ashamed though that they treated other kids this way.

It was a basketball game. The opposing fans were trying to rattle the other team. Happens in almost very sporting event anywhere in the world. It doesn't seem to be personal. Not sure why people are so worked up about this.

Does this mean the band can't play; "Born in the USA" anymore?

Screw the first amendment, it's all about sensitivity.

I believe I heard that the winning team was banned from the state tournament, that seems like excessive PC knee jerk academic overreaction.

After all it wasn't the team, it was the fans who committed the PC error.

Where did it say that? I don't think it specified if it was the fans, the team, or both.

Also, where did you "Hear" the team was banned? Can you provide a link to THAT story so it doesn't seem like you're just saying it to bolster your point?

No they weren't. Some of the fans involved the chant were though. Dallas Kimball beat Alamo Heights in the semis.

After they had already beaten the other team?

Who cares. This is the USA, if they don't like it, they should go back to their country.

This is pretty much the train of thought that makes it inappropriate..."Look brown people, they don't look like they're from around here. Our white, good ole American boys just beat'em. USA! USA!." (There are few other circumstances besides this thought, since there was no mention of anything else. Like I said, if a wounded marine made a final shot, then I'm sorry for assuming.)

When in reality, both high schools are in the USA. Being American is not reserved for white people. We have a proud immigrant tradition and to use USA as a taunt for hispanics is very insulting.

But as mentioned earlier, forced apologies are silly, but I don't mind a principal threatening punishment (in private of course) or the students being banned from future games. It was inappropriate.
