I figured Trump would be an ask for forgiveness type rather than ask for permission. He could have just started deporting, and let it be challenged.

IMO I don't see it any different than locking up the, US citizen, parents of a kid. you carry out the job regardless. Give the parents a choice on what happens to their kid: Child leaves with them, and can legally enter at 18. Child stays with, legal, family or guardians. Child goes into child custody.

Both with the same outcome of forcing judicial review.

I do. Both would be declared 'attacking rights' by some. This way doesn't bother separating a child or deporting anyone; again, I think this was the perfect way to initiate review given the two choices.

This is extremely high risk/high reward but the variables are wild and I don't see how American blood goes not end up spilled over this.

Like I said...in context. In the context of the time it was written, it was to bring all people in america together with rights and freedoms. And to give citizenship to descendents of peoples here against their will. Even in the context of it's purpose, the 14th at that time did not grant unilateral citizenship to everybody and their dog and goat. It did not say, OK you come to our country illegally and pump out a baby and get free birthrights and all kinds of stuff in your goody bags.
