USC players visiting UT in the next few weeks

I spoke with someone at USC Thursday and they are not expecting many more to leave. Really expecting no more to leave but a couple would not be a surprise. I would still be very surprised if UT got or took any from USC.

Person is not on the football staff I spoke to but has a very good feel for the program. Of course, things could have changed since Thursday.

I would as well.

If a coach can bring in a couple of players without it counting against the annual signing limit, for a squad that is down 10 scholarships, he's just looking after the team. It sends the message that he has their backs [six]. Don't think the team will not notice and appreciate the staff's effort.

By the way in case you missed it from ESPN:

Jordan Campbell leaving USC for Louisville
Reserve linebacker Jordan Campbell of Norco (Corona, Calif.) has announced that he is transferring from Southern California to play at Louisville.

The 5-foot-11, 230-pound redshirt-junior will be able to play immediately for the Cardinals as a result of USC's recent NCAA penalties.

Campbell, who had sent his release to West Virginia, Illinois, Cincinnati, Louisville, Tulsa, Arkansas and Mississippi, has two years of eligibility remaining.

Seeing limited action, Campbell was a backup weakside linebacker during the 2009 season and played on special teams. He appeared in five games and started once (Washington State). For the season, he had nine tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss despite missing three games with an ankle sprain.

The linebacker ended 2010 spring practice not officially on USC's roster due to a violation of head coach Lane Kiffin's newly instituted "zero-tolerance" policy.

You have to be very careful paying attention to this. Mainly because if you screw up the team chemistry at this point, even if they are better players, you might undermine the leadership of this team and the development of the players we have.

Be very careful what you wish for at this point, because it could also affect the guys we are currently recruiting as well.

Why would we want USC players? They were only 5* recruits! :)

Weird choice going to Louisville. Strong will turn them around eventually if he stays, but Louisville is going to be horrible for at least the next 2 seasons.

Question: When was the last time you saw a USC player hillside, meditating near a natural body of water?

Answer: Never.

And that's why those guys wouldn't cut it here. They don't want it. Tennessee can't afford to compromise team chemistry. It could send our 5-7 season spiraling into a 4-8 season. You really want to risk that?

bring em on...we need depth and we are in such horrible shape at a few position that a few could work into the 2 deep immediately or start (LB/OL/TE)

I don't think one or two transfers would mess up any team chemistry. "X" has been spot on when it comes to Tenn. recruiting, so I tend to believe the story even if it is coming from Basilio. USC's backups are 4 and 5* talent, so I would love to get some talented help on the OL.

I'm reading this thread and it's causing me to have flashbacks of Kevin Nash screaming "Anarchy!!! Anarchy!!!" into the Nitro headsets.

Is this discussion really happening? I'll take as many good players as we can get. If those USC players can offer better talent at whatever position than we have now, I'll take that in a heart beat. At this point, we have nothing to lose. It's not like we're sitting at the top, favored for a title...we're as low as we can get. Why not try to get more talent? What's there to lose?

And all these people thinking we need high character guys? That's a complete joke. Talent wins games and championships.

I do believe we need character and all the talk about it being bad for team chemistry hopefully it pisses a few off and makes them work harder to earn the spot and if they leave over it obviously they werent the high character player dooley wants on his team.

I don't think any transfer would hurt team chemistry. A team that feels screwed by Kiffin would gladly take in some guys looking to screw him back.

Hell, if they don't start, they bring depth. That is our main concern. We have talent. Just not depth.

In fairness, I've gotta point out that the thread intro said 'several' USC players would visit, whereas the link actually said 'a couple' and went on to mention Mustain specifically. So the actual story implied either 2 or 3 and I wouldn't consider that 'several'.

Now, I understand that there may be no truth to any of this at all. I am just pointing this out because the difference between maybe getting a 'couple' of USC guys and getting 'several' is significant when considering whether there would be a big morale impact on the team, in my opinion. I think it's unlikely we get anyone just because there will likely be relatively few transfers (with lots of school options), but certainly possible. I wouldn't be in favor of bringing in 10 USC guys, but would be more than happy to have a few come in, especially at positions of need.

And once again, the whole character vs. talent debate is a false choice. You've gotta manage it to get the best balance of the two that you can. None of us wish we had walk-on with a heart of gold at QB, but then again, I would hope that none of us want Nu'Keese back, either.

lots of talk about Ronald Johnson to Mich St...Nick Perry gone too
that is a 5* WR and a 4* DE

I can't wait to see the rationale behind this statement.

I think what Eric is trying to say is that an incoming Freshman will be more receptive to a new coaches style than a Junior transfer would. This is because the transfer has listened to the same coach for years and suddenly has a new one doing something different. I could be misunderstanding what Eric is saying though.

If a coach can't maintain "team chemistry" when adding only a couple of players to a thin roster in need of any kind of help whatsoever, he isn't much of a coach. That shouldn't be a reason to turn down a transfer.

Honestly, even with two or three guys at whatever position coming on the team, there is plenty of playing time up for the taking.

so USC doesn't have a new coaching staff?

You have ZERO clue how these guys will mesh with the current team. That is VERY important at this point. You also have to have those guys buy in rather quickly and learn all new playbooks, which isn't something easily done. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's not something that you want to bench someone who has known it for 8 months longer at the start of Fall camp. Just my opinion.

If I am on the team, I would be excited about having some good players added to the team. If you've ever played sports, you should know this. You want to play with the best players possible. If you're getting sit on the bench because someone else comes in and takes your spot, too bad. You should have worked harder. This isn't charity.
