I'm sure Obama gave China his blessings to go forth w/any & all operations of what they want to accomplish. Obama is not about to start wars.

They will be monitored.

But China would be stupid to get aggressive with a navy destroyer.

Hell the US navy is larger than all the other country's navys combined.

"1980 called, and they want their military strategies back."

Why are we the ones who need to worry about it? It's not our laws or our land.

so international laws, especially ones we helped create, don't apply to us? I know we do dumb stuff all the time to simply say we need not worry about international laws is foolish.

IIRC something like 10% of the world's commercial shipping goes through those lanes.

and one of the countries disputing China's claims is an ally. which i know you don't believe in, but we can't abandon them.

China has taken military actions in the past dealing with the South China Sea, nothing to say they won't again.

I didn't realize they didn't exist. I was assuming they were making small ones bigger..

that would be allowed, assuming they were within Chinese waters. But these are reefs they are piling concrete and sand on top of. Which the international laws say you can't do. and China helped write those laws.

Just cause the laws apply to us doesn't mean we enforce them.

China Ready To Use Military Force If US Violates Its Territorial Waters

China will not tolerate U.S. violations

On Thursday, Chinese media slammed the U.S. for its “ceaseless provocations.” The Global Times, a mouthpiece of the Communist Party, said in an editorial that China will not “tolerate rampant U.S. violations” of its territorial waters and skies over the “expanding islands.” Tensions have mounted between the two world powers since China started transforming submerged reefs into artificial islands in the disputed waters.

The artificial islands are large enough to support military facilities. The U.S. says Chinese activities in the disputed waters threaten freedom of navigation. Brunei, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Taiwan have overlapping claims in the waters over which China claims full sovereignty. U.S. has responded by telling its Asian allies that it doesn’t recognize artificial islands, and will sail warships past disputed islands.

Normally, I would say China wouldn't do ****. They're not going to piss off their piggy bank. But we are not in normal times, we have a weak cowardly POTUS and a major percentage of our populace who doesn't give a dam as long as the crap in WalMart is cheap.

idk, I still kinda like enforcing laws rather than having war. and if all enforcing is, is sailing a ship through international waters I see no issue in it. but thats just me, and I am crazy a good bit of the time.

Back in September, a group (not just one ship) of Chinese military vessels sailed through US territorial waters off Alaska and the Aleutians during Obama's big Arctic Summit. I guess a "Hey, we're China, and we're heeerrrrreeee" sort of thing.

What was the response from the US? Basically nil. Defense officials and military brass simply stated the US respected international maritime laws of navigation and the right of innocent passage. No big whoop.

So, only a little over a month later, the US sails one destroyer through China's "territorial" waters off the coasts of its man-made pseudo-islands, and what's the response from China? The CCP and its media empire are *****ing and moaning to high heaven about this "grave offense" and "threat to regional peace and stability."

The CCP is so pathetic. It would be laughable if I didn't think that bastion of human garbage that calls itself the "Chinese Communist Party" didn't also possess the capability of turning an otherwise stable order and good thing into an absolute nightmare due to its ridiculous whims and desires.

Not to mention these reefs (islands) are over 200 miles away from Chinas coastline.
