USU Preview

USU is just as inexperienced as UT, if not more. They have less kids who have started atleast 10 games in their careers. They will probably suspend atleast 1 player. I dont care how much hype chuckie gets i dont think he will be back to his old ways in the first game back behind a new line. If he has nobody to throw to it wont matter much. I know if they suspend anyone they will have lost about 70% of their passing game production from 2013. Thats never good and we saw our team do that last year. They have a new O Line just like we do. New Secondary, lots of new faces, thin TE group and a suspect RB group with another guy coming off a knee injury.Good thing for UT is this doesnt seem like the 2013 Aggies at first glance. I think Gray will get abused. I bet that kid will be thinking way too much .

You act as if we are trotting out a bunch of Freshmen on both lines to start. The OL may not have started together, but they have been in the system two years together. They are maulers and will be fine. If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that both lines were very underwhelming last year. Some of the OL could not really get to the second level when blocking. They were decent in pass protection. The DL was horrendous. There was no outside containment from one of the DE's, there was no push up the middle to collapse the pocket. We will get better play this year from both IMO.
Look again and tell me who has more than 6 snaps of sec action on either line from last season

Utah State has a good football program, they have done pretty well recently. They will beat some people this year-just not us. No disrespect but they do not have anywhere near the athletes we do. I would be surprised if we did not hit 40 points or so in this game.

So does that make them freshman? I am not understanding your logic. By your logic, everyone should start in the SEC before they get a chance to play in the SEC. If they don't start then they are automatically no good. How about you let them play some games first.

Here is the problem... We will be improved on every position EXCEPT the entire OL and the DT's, whether it be from depth or experience. The fault with that is, the OL and DL directly impacts EVERY other player on the field. JMO

Haha. You may not be familiar with the reference. Hang around here until the Georgia game and the old thread will get bumped. Basically a poster made a thread years back saying "we gon whip dey azz" referring to Georgia. Using line after line of poor grammar and spelling, he made a list of ridiculous reasons why, including their ugly cheerleaders, their stupid mascot, and how our coach is going to "out trick their coach with his mind."

It was a classic.

Do you have a link? I really want to read that thread haha.

USU will not win, and in fact will likely lose by 2-3 scores. Same old formula, hang around a little in the 1st half, get punished in 2nd. This will not be as close as many predict. USU lost much of their O and a bunch of their D. They aren't particularly fast or athletic and are undersized in many spots.

Where is USU undersized?

More than 6 snaps? OK.

Crowder, who started the entire SC game, Kerbyson, Wiesman, Vereen, J. Williams, O'Brien, Saulsberry.

That doesnt include, of course, the JUCOs, Blair and O Williams, both expected to be ready.

Lastly, you cagily stated it as "last season" but we know that Marcus Jackson agreed to red shirt last season because we had that luxury, whereas he had played in all 12 games in '12, and played in all 12 in '11, including starting in 5 of those, so we know him to be SEC-ready.

I aint skeered.

USU is undersized at:
RB
they arent big at WR outside of swindall who is not particularly fast
3-4 defenses are supposed to be big. They are not big for a 3-4 D but it does not matter in their conference. 3-4 Ends are usually 290 and up. USUs 3-4 D-ends are 260-275. They do not have a NG that is very effective bc they lost him after 2013.
O Line is a little undersized as a whole but not by much.

They will have a 5'9 Nickel and 170lb corner in Gray. Mosely is about 175lbs at corner for us but they dont have big receivers so it may not matter. The only reason i brought that up is because our WRs are monsters physically.

Why do you say this? Or is it just because you're in the SEC? Our D-line is not small.

its not small and it will be fine. However it is small for a 3-4 D Line in the SEC. Bama for example has 295lb 3-4 DEs and a 310lb Nose.

USU has 260-275lb DEs and a 298lb nose. It wouldnt be small for a SEC 4-3 which would give you one more guy down. They arent quite the athletes bamas are either but then again nobody really is. Im just talking about sheer size. Your D Line size seems like a 4-3 size defense that happens to run a 3-4

its not really the size thing that i look at. I just think Our receivers will eat up Devin Centers and Frankie Sutera. That kid is slow and he got torched last year. If our receivers can run right past Cam Sutton in practice then i dont think Dan Gray, Devin Centers, or Frankie Sutera will stand a chance throughtout a whole game. I just think in the first game in a hostile place i think the USU secondary gives up a ton of plays. USU did it last yr in the opener and they had a legit Secondary then

If our boys come out and just play ball, and don't think to much, this game wont be close at the end. I expect UT to hit the ground running, and set the pace. Opener up Butch, let's see what she'll do!

I wouldn't quite call your DL undersized, but they'll definitely be the smallest of the 3-4 DLs we play this season. Our OL will likely have a higher average weight than your DL. That's unusual for most of the matchups we'll have this season (especially since our OL this season will probably average out about 15-25 lbs lighter than last season). However, your LBs are good enough that I wouldn't worry so much about that if I were USU.

People are making too much about USU. Keeton is nothing special and neither is USU. Anything less than a 14 point victory by UT is going to be considered an underachievement.

Not trying to be a jerk, but have you really seen our "current" QBs or just the last-year ones?

I know what you are getting at, but I'm not going to say they've improved just by watching the O/W game. I want to see it in a game that counts.
