USU Preview

Hey guys, new to the board. I'm a born and bred Nebraskan who loves Husker football. However, I have a lot of respect for the Tennessee program and SEC in general. Me and a friend will be in Knoxville the Saturday of this game and will be attending our first SEC game. We are looking for some southern hospitality, perhaps someone letting us join for some tailgating pregame and a nudge in the right direction to finding reasonably priced tickets. Appreciate all the help in advance!

You should be able to get good prices on good seats on the street. You will be welcomed as long as you don't mention the 1997 and 1999 games. The game is Sunday so plan accordingly.

Just curious...

There have been a lot of fans on this board with realistic expectations that this will be a tough game for UT to win. There have been others that believe UT wins in blowout fashion.
What will it take for those people to eat there words? :)

Just bring some Omaha steaks and keep the red at home on Sunday. There should be plenty of people willing to sell some tickets

Not winning in blow out fashion?

This will at least help you with the tickets. $25 is tough to beat.

With Daniel gray starting as one of their corners, I'm definitely not worried

Not sure we got enough of a look at Gray to know how good he can be. He has more speed than any of our playmakers. I imagine he'll be looking to make a play or two against us too. I'll wait and see if USU has managed to coach him up and if he has put on some muscle.

I'd take North/Croom vs. him. No disrespect to Gray, I entirely agree with you we didn't get a full look, but especially with North I'd take him versus virtually anyone.

Until Gray gets physically strong enough (not likely), I agree, North and Croom are mismatches for him. Of course, you could say that against most any small CB.

Name one sec team that had a winning season after replacing two lines. I'm not to worried about d line, it's the o line that worries me

Seriously, I like this OL much better than the one that returned only Jarrod Shaw as a player with any experience. Redshirt juniors worry me much less than a unit of multiple true freshmen.

I agree that it's a bigger deal than many here realize. Our coaches are going to have to adjust their schemes to make up for our situations up front (specifically OT and DT). I expect to see a lot of stunts up frot defensively to make up for the lack of big bodies that have been seasoned by SEC play and to emphasize the quick passing game and use TEs to make up for OTs who are inexperienced and not the best pass blockers.

We're still probably a year away from having the personnel to just line up and run the system our coaches want to run without having to try to cover up glaring holes somewhere or another.

How do you know any of this? You're guessing just like everyone else. It pisses me off when Internet coaches have already written off this year and summer practice hasn't even started. I guess we should forfeit our entire season. What's the freaking point of playing the games.

I'm not writing us off this season or saying I know any of this will happen. None of us really know what will happen this season, but we do know that at OT we'll likely be starting a true freshman and either a walk-on or a guy who couldn't beat out a walk-on this spring. And at DT we'll be playing mostly undersized or very young guys. We probably shouldn't expect them to be world-beaters.

I was just making some guesses (mostly based off of what local sports writers have observed or speculated) on the adjustments we'll have to make if we don't get great play at those positions. Having to scheme around a couple of positions where you dot hae your ideal personnel doesn't mean we can't have a successful season though.

I'm actually optimistic about this season. I think we finally have some of the playmakers at some impactful positions to turn things around and make a bowl. I just don't think that we have ideal personnel across the board to line up and just do all the things offensively and defensively our coaches want to do quite yet. I have faith that the coaches will figure something out. I just realize that we have a few position groups that will likely take some lumps this year.

My apologies. I read it as if you were writing us off, which is your right, but I was getting tired of reading negative posts about our team from our fans.

If we don't start Gilliam, then we're starting a guy who DID beat out a FORMER walk-on.

It is a big deal and I think people are understating the issue. Pennington addressed this issue quite well on Sunday Sports Source and broke down each players actual game snaps. To sumerize the situation, not good. Imagine trying to start a team at any level with zero returning starters on the line. It's a huge deal and IMO the biggest ? of the season. No team on SEC history has been this way so thinking its all going to be ok is a delusion at this point

Before the 2012 season Dooley was talking about how excited he was because of the number of starts on our O and D lines, we went 5-7. Both of those lines returned, so the the number of total starts by the 2013 season was insane, again we went 5-7.

This whole "number of starts/returning starters on the lines" thing is way overvalued. We have the skill positions now just like in 2012, only this time our defensive coaches and players actually understand the concept of how to play football. We will be fine.

Bray kept a pretty clean uniform in 2012 and he was a pretty darn good QB.

Ok so returning starters aren't important?

Im going to come out and say it, just like the georgia game last year. Cam Sutton is going to end Chuckie's season. Those leg tackles Cam does have no remorse.

I'm not pouting but some of you are delusional to think we don't have issues at line. If these guys are so good why didn't they start or play more last year?

Sparty has handled that question numerous times. In a nutshell, CBJ's 1st year was about continuity, locker room sanity, and handing the seniors a bit of dignity after the dooley dung. That group of olinemen were good when they wanted to be - but failed to get a yard to beat Vandy. the dline also failed when the game was on the line. I think you'll see a bit more grit out of this group.
