UT announces new deal for Pearl

one pays for attention, which develops interest, which, unsurprisingly, gives way to revenue. Success, sadly--and here you can blame the culture of sports--is secondary to that.

There is a plateau here in college sports, one that levels off significantly after a team suddenly becomes a consistent ncaa qualifier, and only years after that new success becomes an expectation do we find a new plateau that has to be reached.

The obvious case in point here is baseball's atlanta braves, and though that is an almost too-perfect illustration, it hammers home the idea pretty well.

We are not the average fan an AD has in mind when doling out loot, and nor should we be given our fervent minority. Arguing about the worthiness of this contract on 'our terms' seems a bit navie.

I disagree. The culture of sports has been completely bastardized by this idea of running things as a business. The only business should be winning. Banners will bring in every bit as much money as PTI appearances.

Well yes, that's not really disagreeing. Being 'secondary' doesn't mean being 'non-existent' or 'irrelevant'. It just means that when something is run under a business-model that looks for something more steady than 'sweet 16 wins'(which we all know is no science, barring some exceptions), that model will favour the more easily-attainable traits like attention, interest, hoopla, as those goals are more independent from the lucks and fortunes that alter seedings, matchups, bad-bounces, etc.

Is it a sound method? I dunno, probably not so much. Is it wiser than looking at win columns? Yes, when you realize the majority of your fans, at this point(see: plateaus), are not spoiled. Is is sustainable? Of course not.

Where did we finish in attendence this year?
In the country that is.

Oh, and it seems that Memphis is having trouble bringing a quality coach in right now, even with the $2M + and great facilities.

That's great, but if can't do better than the Sweet Sixteen, or whatever crap this year was, then that money isn't going to keep pouring in.

You're right, but I don't think we're headed for an attendance dropoff just yet.

If Pearl's weaknesses are not corrected the wins will dwindle and so will the attendance, but he's built up a lot of equity.

When enough people stop supporting the program, then you have a business problem, til' then SEC East titles, and NCAA appearances and 20,000 plus crowds puts the situation where it is. You can like it, or not like it.

I think that those with the big bucks realize how much different the basketball culture in Knoxville has become in the past 5 years. Check the record vs the SEC. Check the attendance. Times have changed.

We have brought in great talent, but it's young. If we can continue to bring in quality players and Bruce can tune his system a bit, I think we will be right in the hunt come as early as the next season.

I hope he can do just that.

Pearl may not have deserved a raise...I've already said that.

BUT HE GOT ONE!

Don't like it?

catpause.com....go there.

If you're going to sit back and scrutinize...if you're going to crap on the coach...if you're going to play the high and mighty card, sitting there informing all of us exactly what is wrong with the program and the way YOU would fix it...then you're better off somewhere else.

Just my opinion. I'm not claiming to know everything, but I am intelligent enough to know that if I have a situation arise where MAYBE I can add a few 0's to paycheck, I'm going to take it and run.

He didn't add any 0s.

I really like the Soviet style of agree with the powers or go elsewhere. Don't want any dissent or for someone to think enough to form an opinion. Further, why would anyone for an opinion? It's not like the pay raised set a precedent or make it more expensive to change down the road.

Adding 0's is a term used to basically say that the guy got more money.

Thanks for being over-analytical.

Arguing a point is one thing...degrading others and being a jerk is another. God forbid I feel differently about this situation.

Bottom line: I think BP has down a pretty good job. He's put a program together that sells seats...and you CAN'T overlook that. He's gotten a town interested in a team that played second fiddle in their own arena. He's recruited fairly well and now its on him to develop that talent. He's had success in the NCAA tournament. Two consecutive sweet sixteens is a big deal. Argue all you want, but most programs don't accomplish that. HE HAS WON BIG GAMES (ex: UF, Memphis, Texas). Does he deserve a huge chuck of money to stay here? Nope...but thats the way the business works. There are trends and cycles that schools must either follow or take a step back. Look at the Spread offense in CFB. Is he the best coach in the nation? Absolutely not. He's not an Izzo or Self. I do think he's even in that league. Is he top 20? I think so.

Thats all just my opinion. This is where I am coming from when I try to make a point.

Feel free to over analyze this too.

But those of us who disagree with you should go to Catspause? That's incredibly dumb.

I wasn't talking about those who disagree. I was referring to those who seem to have little faith in the coach...or the program for that matter. I was just offering up an alternative. UK has a new coach that I'm sure some on here would love to doubt.

I'm really not trying to be abrasive. If I've come of that way, I do apologize.

I just can't figure out all the negativity. Maybe I see through orange-shaded glasses. Turns out the raise was nothing more than a small show of faith. Thats really irrelevant though. He's here and he's the coach. He's done a good job turning the program around. I don't know how anyone could really agrue against that. The only feasible argument is that he didn't do with his players, but I've yet to hear that mentioned in the back and forth banter. I guess I might as well just agree to disagree on this way.

jrob- you are exactly right. There are 6 or 8 posters who make the basketball forum more painful than pleasurable and informative, and hence less used by many Vol basketball fans. All can say is that BPV may want to revisit his policy if he wants the basketball forum to grow and flourish.

Can you remotely defend this silliness or are you just mad that both of your other points have proven to be dead wrong?
