UT announces new deal for Pearl

So, if you were offered $3.2 million you wouldn't consider it? I would...especially when some of the morons in Knoxville are ignorant enough to call for his head. My God, its not like he had a horrible year. He took a young team to the tourney (where they lost to a game OK ST), won the SEC East, made it to the conference tourney finals, played some the nations best teams hard and recruited the #2 PG in the class of 2010.

You're just full of fallacies today. Quote one post where someone is calling for his head.

Here comes the "Pearl is the only coach who can win at UT" argument. If Pearl left, we have the facilities and coaching budget to continue to rise in the bball world. We could easily get a coach with a better resume for what we are paying CBP. That is the problem some people have.

If it was so easy to get a quality coach to come to UT, then why did it take 30 years to win another conference title after Mears? It's not like we are some kind of basketball tradition rich school or a destination program. I am not saying Pearl is the only one who can do it, but I sure do not want to spend the next 10 years trying to find another good fit.

1. With the upgrades to TBA and the addition of the Pratt Pavilion, we have the facilities of a real bball program.

2. 2mil+ a year is more than many top flight coaches make. Money talks. It shouldn't be overly hard to get someone in with some consistency and deep tourney runs under their belt.

3. UT is at least talked about on the national stage again. Before Pearl came, I would have agreed with you, but now coaches around the country know that it is possible to win on a large scale at UT.

4. The UT fanbase is energized and turned onto basketball now. Once again, before Pearl I would have agreed with you because of this, but now we average something like top five in attendance in the nation.

JJAY - Pearl is the reason for your 4 points. I think that in and of itself he desearves what he is making. Like him or not, Pearl is TN basketball. Before Pearl, nothing, with him we have all the things you pointed out. I say keep him around a while longer.

Yes, Pearl laid the foundation, but that doesnt' mean he's irreplacable. If he can't get past the Sweet 16 then his star will fade. It was just this very season that people were complaing that TBA wasn't filling up for home games. And that was a season we still made the NCAAT.

Translastion: With the success has come new expectations. People can't have it both ways; you can't pay him and give him credit for "creating" UT basketball and then turn around and talk about how much better he is than Buzz ball, etc. Pearl is getting paid like a top notch coach and so top notch results are going to be expected.

Don DeVoe and Jerry Green both won SEC titles.

I'd say having an athletic director who was openly disdainful of basketball for most of that time had something to do with it.

Well I am just glad the basketball program didn't have to fold....so I guess this really was Hamilton's only option.

Of course it was. Had Pearl departed Thompson Boling Arena would have fallen into the Tennessee River, unemployment in East Tennessee would have skyrocketed to 93%, mothers would have decapitated their children in anger, Tennessee would have hired the love child of Wade Houston and Jerry Green to be the coach, and Mike Griffith would have been reassigned to the NASCAR/Atomic Speedway beat.

***ATTENTION ALL PEARL HATERS, LET THE BASHING CONTINUE***
Sorry, couldn't help myself there. Great day for UT and the basketball program! Won't get as much press as the Calipari deal, but we have a guy who can challenge him for wins.:clapping:

Dang - wish he could challenge him for tournament success too.

I don't really understand why anyone is so concerned with what he makes.....If he starts winning 10-12 games a year it won't take too long for him to be gone.....He played the system and he got what he wanted...So what...

Because the vast majority of the people on this board don't get rewarded for lack of performance.

Who said anything about not keeping him around? You asked why we would be able to attract a top coach now, and I told you. I freely admitted that Pearl took us to where we are now. Stop trying to say I'm arguing a point that I'm not.

That doesn't justify him pulling in the same salary as perennial league champion, elite 8 and better coaches though, because that's not what CBP is. If he can show that his team doesn't fold in every tournament they're in, then think about giving him a raise that's justified.

Again...I say....So What....

It just doesn't matter to me what he makes....If he starts having Buzz Peterson seasons he will be gone....

I'm pretty sure if he keeps getting the Vols into the tourney and keeps getting mentioned to replace coaches as they get fired or leave other schools he will continue to get raises...That's just how it is....

There are many more things in life to be worried about than what a basketball coach makes....

Fine, do you think Bruce Pearl deserves more money than Jamie Dixon and Jim Calhoun?

one pays for attention, which develops interest, which, unsurprisingly, gives way to revenue. Success, sadly--and here you can blame the culture of sports--is secondary to that.

There is a plateau here in college sports, one that levels off significantly after a team suddenly becomes a consistent ncaa qualifier, and only years after that new success becomes an expectation do we find a new plateau that has to be reached.

The obvious case in point here is baseball's atlanta braves, and though that is an almost too-perfect illustration, it hammers home the idea pretty well.

We are not the average fan an AD has in mind when doling out loot, and nor should we be given our fervent minority. Arguing about the worthiness of this contract on 'our terms' seems a bit navie.
