UT announces new deal for Pearl

Yeah...its not like the guy breathed a little life into an abysmal program. Its not like he took a team that was a cellar dweller of the SEC East on a regular basis and almost instantly turn them into the team to beat in the conference. Lord help us if we don't win 30 games every year. In fact, not only does the guy NOT deserve a raise...he should be fired. Wait...IMPRISONED!

Some of you guys are flat out ridiculous. I'm not hear to question anyone's intelligence, but statements like some of these leave me to wander if some of our posters live in reality or fantasy land.

Don't want to give the guy a raise? Fine...let him go to Memphis. We'll just go back to being the program that NO ONE cares about. I LOVE being the laughing stock of a lackluster conference. Thats cool.

These basketball forums prompt a little chuckle from me sometimes.

Two implied pieces here that make me laugh at you: lack of Pearl means default to the Houston or Buzz days and that Memphis was going to hire Pearl so the raise "kept" him.

Its not like he was a nobody before we gave him his first chance at a big program when everybody else passed him over......Its not like we didn't give him more money than he has ever earned....Its not like we didn't hire him with the expectations of turning the program around.

It's not ?

Yeah, but he has repaid us with extreme loyalty.

Whether or not people think he "deserved" a raise based on performance is irrelavent. It is very simple economics: Supply and Demand. The demand on Pearl this year was higher, because memphis was interested, but the supply stayed the same (only 1 BP). Therefore the cost of keeping BP went up. Who knows, BP may have never been interested in the memphis job, and just played UT for a raise. If he did, good move. If he really was interested in the memphis job, then Mike Hamilton obviously wanted to ensure that we kept him.

I think its funny how some people take personal offense to Pearl's raise, as if it somehow means that their money is now useless.

I don't think that anyone here, or at least anyone I interact with here regularly, is personally offended in the least. The only thing offended could perhaps be one's sensibilities...

Are you saying that Memphis had no interest in hiring Pearl?

He is either implying that...or that they had no "real" interest in hiring him. If they are looking at paying their next coach 3 mil a year, then there is no reason they should be looking at Pearl.

“I want to be able to say, unequivocally, that leaving was not an option,’’ Pearl told the News Sentinel. “Where there was smoke, there was fire.’’

So if he never wanted to leave, why does he deserve a raise?

Is it based on performance?

So Tennessee pacified him and now he comes out with, "Leaving was never an option"? Okie dokie Bruce.

So, if you were offered $3.2 million you wouldn't consider it? I would...especially when some of the morons in Knoxville are ignorant enough to call for his head. My God, its not like he had a horrible year. He took a young team to the tourney (where they lost to a game OK ST), won the SEC East, made it to the conference tourney finals, played some the nations best teams hard and recruited the #2 PG in the class of 2010.

When I said "ignorant" I was talking about you. If you knew half as much as you thought you did, you'd be the most informed poster on this board.

Fact is, Pearl was offered serious money to leave. he thought about it. Mike Hamilton pulled out the UT checkbook and he decided to stay.

"This is, without a doubt, where he wants to be." (Because he got a fat raise)

SO WHAT!?

I'm not saying that UT is gonna slip back into obscurity...theres no way for any of us to know that. What I do know is that as long as I've kept up with UT basketball (going all the way back to the Stevie Hamer days) there's been one true run of national prominence. It was led by Pearl. Sorry if I feel like the guy is good for the program.

You all wanna cry foul because you feel that a raise should be based on wins and losses. Honestly, he's getting paid to stay. Plain and simple. Its not like they're giving Kevn O'neil a few mill to coach. I think he's proven he's a commodity. You say he doesn't deserve, and thats fine. I don't think Cal deserves the 3.7 mil. Whatever. He probably doesn't deserve 3 mil. Fact is, thats the trend. Sometimes, you've got to pay to play with the Duke's and UNC's of the world.

No, these "morons" you speak of were just not going to cry and beg him to stay.

They're not that young, and its a lame excuse.

(where they lost to a game OK ST), won the SEC East,

Ok Fulmer, now enough of that.

made it to the conference tourney finals,

And promptly lost to an otherwise NIT bound team.

played some the nations best teams

The SEC was garbage this year.

hard and recruited the #2 PG in the class of 2010.

They you are now.

Wow. All the way back to Steve Hamer. You're a regular historian. You should set up a meeting with Tom Mattingly. He can use your massive volume of historical knowledge as the basis for one of those columns he writes on Sunday.

I suspect you have no idea what you're talking about but you're welcome to make every effort to prove me ignorant. What do you know of the events vis a vis Pearl's employment situation over the last month?

1. It's not about me
2. Who has called for his head?
3. How young are Bobby Maze, Tyler Smith, Wayne Chism, JP Prince or Josh Tabb?
4. Seriously?? They played some teams hard?

Because he got a raise last year and did absolutely nothing that warranted another raise this year. Unless there was some idiotic "20 wins and simply get into the NCAA tourney" clause that I didn't know about.

So raises should be based solely on the w-l record? What value to you place on money made and donated to the athletic department because of Pearl?

if this was pearls 1st year then i agree he shouldnt deserve a praise, and probably wouldnt have gotten one. you have to look at what he has done though in comparison to his competition. cars get priced because of their competition, even if a car is the same as the year before if other comparable cars raised theirprice so do they. it is simple business principles, supply and demand, and fair market price. going by what pearl has done he is the 2nd best coach in the sec 3rd if you now want to count coach cal which is fine, so the 3rd highest salary is fair. alabama paid grant more than pearl, georgia was reported to be going to pay their coach more, and im sure trent johnson will be gettinga raise shortly. so pearls fair market value should be 3rd highest, somewhere around 2.5 million a year or so. its the same in all sports, and athletes are the same way, if somebody gets a raise then they usethem as the model and expect one to, its business.

Here comes the "Pearl is the only coach who can win at UT" argument. If Pearl left, we have the facilities and coaching budget to continue to rise in the bball world. We could easily get a coach with a better resume for what we are paying CBP. That is the problem some people have.
