UT Martin Baseball ?

Permit me to chime in with Rachel regarding her comments about Coach Cates earlier. The man is a flat out class act and it shows in his players. I teach a good number of them in their English 111 and English 112 courses. In general, an English teacher's nightmare of nightmares is to walk into a class with a cadre of athletes sitting there staring at you. In general, you know they hate the subject and regard you with no great admiration due to your very palpable proximity to it. Fortunately, and I am sure I owe much to coach, my experiences with UTM baseball players has been as pleasant as pleasant can be. They are sharp, polite, gentlemanly and hard workers. In fact, I have had good luck with all the athletes who have ended up in my classes. The baseball players, though, continue to be the shining best of them all.

Finally, I must say seeing a UT Martin thread catch a breeze and take on a life of its own surprised me more than just a little. Lest we forget, though, UT Martin is the college home of Pat Head Summit. That has to count for something!!

Here's what I have heard lately. UTM budgets about $110K to $120K for the baseball program to hire coaches (HC and one asst). However, there is a chunk of that money still being paid to the former coach, who btw, is still on staff at UTM as a Math teacher.

Ozment is rumored to be very interested in the job and trying to position himself as a viable candidate (there are some pushing him for the job). Also, apparently Tony David is still interested (Samford asst who was a finalist in the fall) but, he is also waiting to see if some other jobs may come open closer to Birmingham.

The AD is not asking for a lot of help but it will be difficult to hire an outsider with good credentials for the amount of money being offered (<$75K).

samanderson, great mention of Pat Head Summitt being an alumnus of UTM. Also, Leonard Hamilton, the head basketball coach at Florida State is also an alumnus (I think he and Pat were in the same graduating class).

GVF, calm down. I wasn't casting disparaging remarks about your school or any others. I was simply stating that none of those schools had such an overwhelming advantage over UTM that the Sky Hawks couldn't compete with them.

The main point remains, UTM has not been serious about baseball or they would not have been so bad for the past 20 years.

Well, actually I did grad school at Tech and have family history in Cookeville, but other than that, those aren't my schools. My school got beat up alot by those schools back in the day.

Skyhawks name a new baseball coach. Raise your hand if you have heard of this guy?

Talked to some folks who know him. Apparently, he is a serious baseball guy who will bring discipline to the program.

I feel so bad and sad for the present players and also the coaches at UTM, This is a disgrace if they knew they were going to fired Coach Cates why they didn't do this back in June, Somebody drop the ball and it sounds to me that somebody needs to get fired from the top, MR Dane you and your posy's need to look for another job you guys are a disgrace to UTM athletics'.

rachel11,
You so accurately hit the nail on the head with your remarks about Dane. Prior to becoming AD, he was our vice-chancellor of financial affairs. Some people, it seems, are put on this earth with the singular purpose of eliciting feelings of spite within each person they come into contact with...

I at one time actually made a concerted effort to try and elevate him to the level of one of my "friendly acquaintances." I couldn't, though, muster the energy or desire that the project required. And too, my motivations for making the attempt were less than pure. I had left full-time teaching for an administrative position and knew internal politics dictated anyone with administrative duties would be wise to establish and remain on good terms with the vice-chancellor of financial affairs. Because I am not one who enjoys forcing a smile while biting my tongue, I soon requested to return to teaching. Ever since, I have maintained a strict policy of 100% avoidance in terms of him.
