UT under potential NCAA investigation for NIL

Finebaum is saying today that its being covered by all kinds of reporters that typically don't cover sports, which is an indication that the NCAA leaked to all of them and is doing this to burnish its image.
Looking at the Times story byline: one guy is a NIL/money in sports reporter, one guy reports on non-profits, one guy is a Washington DC political reporter.

I didn't read the article but the political guy seems out of place unless the article leaned into the "government needs to fix this crap" narrative the NY Times likes for any and every problem in America.

I'm that nervous
If the only new allegations involve NIL .... Tennessee has a lot of ammunition to fight with. The worst possible scenario (and this won't happen) would involve Nico Iamaleava being ruled ineligible. Tennessee having to forfeit games he played in .... and Tennessee having to disassociate from Spyre Sports Group.

Even that would be extreme and is highly unlikely.

The NCAA's guidelines were too ambiguous at the time, and have been ever changing since. Both Spyre and Donde Plowman have publicly disputed claims of wrongdoing.

The sad thing is it's just something else other schools can use against us on the recruiting trail. We just got out from under that cloud a few months ago and here we are again.
Yes, that is where the most damage from this will come from .... a negative recruiting tool against us.

The only thing that could get serious is if it turns out someone on staff was orchestrating everything with Spyre. That’s when you might need to worry. But so far, there’s been no evidence to that occurring. And Plowman isn’t a moron; she won’t release a letter like that unless she knows for sure there’s nothing there.

And I think in whatever “notice” we received, Plowman stated that no UT staff was mentioned in the allegations.

Well, dang- Michigan had someone on staff who was stealing signals. FSU had similar situation with the collective, IIRC.
I don’t think much will come from it, although I’m more concerned about negative recruiting than anything

I noticed that too and it got me wondering, if that’s the case, then how is this a TN problem? How can you punish a university for a private collective that’s not working in tandem with the university? That’s the one head scratcher for me.

The NCAA is pretty much done. No real power. They are trying to make up the rules as they go along and in the beginning of NIL, they were so far behind that it was basically the wild west. To say that schools are doing it wrong under their "rules" means absolutely nothing.

NCAA governing body is no longer relevant when it comes to College Football. Just a way for them to get what money they can from whatever university before they no longer have skin in the game. Fox and ESPN own College football now.

The NCAA’s stance is that Marketing & Media Groups representing student athletes is acceptable however they must remain totally independent and cannot in any way be tied to any type of recruiting coercion. I think it is safe to assume Spyre/The Volunteer Club coerced Nico into signing with UT and Spyre at least allegedly. The obvious conflict is with the tie in to ‘The Volunteer Club.’ MMG’s like Spyre can and should represent marketable athletes but they are going to have to evolve and they cannot be affiliated with college programs.

Join the club. It’s basically everyone under investigation except Georgia and Alabama, the originators of the shadiness.
They know who to pay always have . But Why was UT leaked and but in the NCAA light ? Hmmmmmmm

😂 Ok. Their stance is pretty damn irrelevant if this goes to court. Plowman already drew a line in the sand this is going to court if they pursue it. NCAA doesn’t want any part of that.

Hey, attorneys ring in please. What is UT looking at in damages from the NCAA for this? I would expect any attorney would love to be party to this. Ghost of Johnny Cochran?

That potentially fatal issue for the NCAA is antitrust. They basically have already been told that any attempt to interfere with an athletes ability to maximize thier financial potential will not be allowed.
