Utah St. vs Auburn....wow

Are some of you actually saying that the ball can be punched up in the air straight off the tee, not touching the ground, travel in the air 10 yards, and be legally fielded by the kicking team?

I think you've got it now. This is a kickoff not a punt

As long as the receiving team doesn't call for a fair catch, yes.

Yes, how long have you been watching college football?

I never argued a rule interpretation by a crew; I just didn't see the ball hit the ground off the tee. Have another drink.

It would not matter. 10 yards & it's a live ball. If it goes straight up in the air & goes 10 yards a guy can field a fair catch but in that chaotic moment nobody would think to do so or be expecting it.

Wonder how much Auburn pays the headline writer for yahoo sports? After being down by 10 points with 4 min. left in the game to the third best team in Utah (fercripessake!) the headline for their comeback was "Like a Champion!". Bwaaahahahahahhaaa!

Strange how a simple discussion turns into an attack from the keyboard superstars. If the rule is the way some of you say, it's definitely different than high school rules. It's no wonder why this site is loaded with ego maniacs that would never act the same face to face, good day.

Bummer. This is USU's M.O. right now though, play hard and hang with more talented teams but be unable to finish.

how is it different than HS? I have a hard time believing they just let the return team just catch a live ball without any pressure at all. That makes the kickoff basically a punt

most do bounce it off the ground but it's not a requirement

You mean like when you signed off a post with "have another drink"?

High school rules vary from state to state but in SC on a pooch kickoff the guy has to call fair catch or get clobbered.

In high school, if the ball is punched up in the air instead of being hit into the ground like most onside kicks, the receiving team must have a chance to catch it. The Auburn onside kick recovery, unless it hit the ground off the tee, would not be allowed.

Must be your state's HS rule.

I didn't mean that as a dig, I just thought people were getting worked up over a simple question.

I know, man. It doesn't bother me. It amazes me what people get worked up about.

I did not know that about the high school rule. Interesting.

I never officiated high school football, only high school and college baseball, but a lot of my buddies do. This exact thing happened at Knox Central about 4 years ago and was not allowed. I asked about the call later, and that was the explanation.

High school officials are a joke. If you're a high school official sorry if the truth hurts.

There was someone there to field it; my only question is whether or not it was kicked into the ground before it popped up and traveled 10 yards. If it did, no problem. If it didn't, US has to be given a chance to catch.

No they don't, this isnt a punt being discussed here

Once a kickoff travels 10 yards, it is a free ball
