Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics thread

women curlers lose yet again.

They didn't play too badly this time. They were just outclassed by one of the best women's teams in the world.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the US is never going to be a curling powerhouse as long as we're relying exclusively on part-timers from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Shuster's a bartender; McCormick works at a Home Depot. And they're going up against pros.

Ahh yes, Shuster, the biggest choke artist in the history of the sport.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that you have no idea whether that's the case or not. None of us know anything about the sport. We don't know how much of this is "choking" and how much of it is "just not world-class level to begin with." We don't know whether having a bad tournament and being unable to draw consistently is as commonplace as a two-week slump in baseball, which happens to even the best hitters.

I'm not saying Shuster isn't choking -- I said so myself upthread -- but it takes a lot of damn gall for somebody who's only watched a sport a handful of times to proclaim somebody the worst choker in its history. It's like some British guy watching only the NFL playoffs -- while having the rules explained to him -- and then declaring that the Chargers are the worst football team in history.

The American team isn't all that great to begin with but Shuster has had a terrible time of it in these Olympic games. The team as a whole is lacking but he in particular has been pretty dreadful, especially in key situations.

I totally agree. But again, none of us know anything about how common it is to suddenly lose your draw weight for a tournament like he and McCormick have done. This may be not be all that unusual. It's just that it gets magnified if it happens to be in the Olympics and suddenly millions of nimrod newbies are watching for the first time. I mean, McCormick has a hell of a resume, including a world championship. Now she looks like she's only been playing a month. Going into a slump may not be that unusual, even for good players.

(Or it may not -- all I'm saying is that I have no idea. Just like (probably) everybody else on a UT board.)

Anyone here the second intermission of the Canada/Germany game?? The announcer said that Germany was getting "peed on". That was funny, but it was funnier when Roenick looked at him and was shocked and said "peed on"? Funny stuff

anybody else see the speedskater get dq'ed when he would have won gold. that would probably be one of the worse feelings ever on a national stage.

I caught the end of the story. Was he racing correctly and his coach told him he was in the wrong lane so he wrongly switched lanes or did the racer mess up on his own?

from what i saw the camera panned to his coach on the final lap to tell sven what lane he needed to be in or whatever the coaches are on the ice to tell them and then as he went in to the last turn he kind of stuttered and went to the inside lane. so i am not sure if it was second guessing on his part or his coach messed up. but dude was angry and started throwing his glasses and basically making it known to the coach to get far away from him. so i have to believe it was the coach to blame from his reaction. either way it was a major mess up to prevent a gold medal.

Yea, dude was pissed at his coach and in general, no doubt. Maybe I will see/hear the story more a little later.

How frickin close was that shot at the end of the second period? Dang.

Streaming media is usually blocked at work. Being able to watch the hockey game was a pleasant surprise.
