Vandy pregame discussion

Well of course nothing is guaranteed, that's obviously why the games are played. Saying "anything can happen" is unnecessary in sports; we've all seen that maxim proved, so let's just assume its implicit in every person's voiced opinion.

But to suggest that Vandy benefits more from their court instead of just simply because they have a quality team who plays in front of their fans, is to suggest poorly.

Again: illinois(decent team), illinois-chicago(exact opposite of decent team)

If we lose tonight--which we certainly may--it won't be simply due to memorial.

I mean honestly: who have they beaten there this year?
wow. you need to stick to stats. I might not have mattered this particular season, but it has mattered in a many a season prior.

Having wacthed several games at Vandy through the years, it's an intimidating place/crowd to play at and infront of. If we bring our A-game (Georgetown performance type) we have a 50% of winning. If we don't we lose by 10/15.

The way the rafters cut across the top gives a strange visual from the court and the benches on the ends with the wide-wide-wide sides is about as goofy as it gets. Vandy benefits much more from Memorial than they ever have due to their fan base.

I meant in conference. Phog's house was probably tougher from a starry eyed team's perspective.

Based on shear goofiness of the facility - I'd place Memorial on top.

When you look at tough road games, I'd place Rupp, O'Connell Center, and Bud Walton right at the top too.

Yes it totally has, as all home courts have to teams that are in roughly the top 50.

If it's a such a gauntlet and huge boon then how does one explain losing to I-C. by 20?

It would be hard to reconcile that.

If Memorial is really such a great place of benefit for vandy, they should at least split vs a poor vols team and a decent florida team, no?

Also, what do you mean it didnt matter this year but mattered in the past? Did they change the outlay? Or is there something different about memorial?

Or is it maybe simply that the teams of the past were just better?

Other than the win vs us last year and 06's defeat over florida, there isn't really much in the way of great wins by vandy@vandy in the past 6 years. In fact, there's even more bad losses(I-C., Furman, georgia).

Vandy 77

Tennessee 64

We can't shoot. Stallings will exploit that. Chism can't stay out of foul trouble so they will feed McClellan and Ogilvy. Vandy can shoot the three. Oh and it's at Memorial.

Vegas has the game as a pick for no other reason than Memorial Gym.

vegas gives upwards of 4 points to home college teams, which means they have UT as a 4 point favorite neutral, which sounds about exactly right. Remember: we don't even have 1 vote in the top 25; no one considers us such a threat these days.

no. the team isn't good enough this season for it to matter against decent teams, period.

Illinois-chicago is not a decent team.

What about how they've only had 2 good wins @ vandy in the past 6 years and 4 bad losses? That doesnt seem like it's 'mattered' then either.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

So you think Tennessee should win by a comfortable margin?
no. I said our youth is a problem in a tough gym like Memorial.

If we play well and focus at the D end, we can kill Vandy, but neither of those is a strong suit.

I'm just wondering how 'memorial' matters if they only have 2 good wins(FLORIDA, TENNESSEE) there in the past 6 years, and 3 bad losses in that same span(IC, FURMAN, GEORGIA).

I'm just saying I think we are misattributing the effect of memorial simply because vandy has had good teams for the last bunch of years and so naturally good teams win at home.

Vandy can easily win tonight, but that has more to do with us being mediocre and less to do with a silly court outlay.

I'm saying it matters in that they beat teams there that they wouldn't beat in a typical gym configuration and without the very vertical feel on the floor.

Basketball teams lose, even heavily favored ones. The game doesn't lend itself to winning all the time without special type players or coaches, neither of which Vandy has had.

Remind me which of Vandy's teams over the past 6 seasons was good? Their gym helped them handle business, period. They have been a mediocre team who wins almost everything in their own gym. They've been awful defensively, weak athletically but could shoot the 3 - at home.

Well then couldnt the same be said of arky? of even tennessee minus last year? Even LSU if we scratch off the abomination of '08? That's a lot of teams in one conference to have such great court advantage, it seems.

Vandy never really beat anyone that special @memorial, other than the 2 aforementioned games, and they've managed to lose to as many horrible teams there also.

Vandy has some big road wins the last few years too:

2004: @alabama(elite 8 team)
2006: @georgetown(sweet 16 team); kentucky(8 seed)
2007: @kentucky(8 seed)

I could be wrong on this, but I just dont think it's that easy to say they benefit so much because of memorial. It looks crazy weird, but I've played in some strange places too and any decent player tunes that stuff out once you get in the swing of things.

Tennessee at Vanderbilt opened at a "Pick 'em", however, the Vols have sinced moved to a 1 point favorite.

I'm taking the Vols, laying the point, and laughing all the way to the bank. :hi:

their team isn't good enough to boast the home conference record that they do, IMO.

By the by, their absolute dismantling of KY and us at memorial last year were big wins.
