Vandy's a good team and coached by a good coach

True. Not ignoring it. it was a terrible loss, obviously much worse then our squeaking by South Alabama.

My point, though, is that 6-6 for 2007 Alabama looks much different than 6-6 for 2013 Tennessee (if we can win our last 2).
Bamer was competitive in every single game they played that year. Including every ranked team they played. We have only been competitive in 1 on of our 6 losses. To compare simply based on record completely misses the point.

Bama was more competitive because they had more talent than UT does right now. While Shula was not a very good X's and O's coach, he didn't exactly leave the cupboard bare for Saban. He had a little to work with. Once he weeded out the players who didn't want to play for him and he got a couple of his own recruiting classes then they started beating everyone.

It won't mean crap at kickoff though

History and facilities will only take you so far. We saw that with the last staff. Its funny that Dooley's best class was his first one. I guess as the recruits saw how he managed a game and it didn't improve, all the salesman crap didn't work anymore

Same thing will happen to Butch. No improvement and all the talk in the world and Brick by Brick won't fight the results shown on the scoreboard

Right now, the results are the same on the field but the recruiting is miles ahead of what we have seen. Hopefully the results will follow

The overall record might be the same, but I'd say the results are a little better. No way in hell we are in the game with UGA or South Carolina with Dooley as coach. The Oregon, Bama, Mizzou and Auburn games have shown anyone that knows anything about football just how bad our talent is right now. It still amazes me that we somehow beat South Carolina with the talent we currently have.

I can see academically why Vanderbilt is attractive. Other than that I see nothing. Tennessee just upgraded its facilities and has a stadium that seats 102,455 fans. I have one question to any Candy fan...What do you want to see out of your team long-term? Championships? Or just being an average SEC team?

Sorry, so long.

As a vandy fan I would like to see consistency, well coached, disciplined football against competitive teams with equal or superior talent and to spring an upset or two each year. I would just assume get rid of all the cupcake games. Go to a bowl game outside the state of TN and every so often be in the discussion the last few weeks for a chance to compete for an SEC East title. I would like for Vanderbilt to continue to show the commitment to football that it has since Franklin arrived and continue to do the other things that universities in the SEC do to garner recruits. Keep the stadium at its current capacity and make it the most expensive ticket to scalp on any given Saturday. Nashville is a great town and with the facility upgrades they have made and the $ to come out of pocket when the needs arise, Vanderbilt will be a much easier job to attract a good coach if Franklin decides he wants to move on. For 3 years we have heard Franklin will move on to greener pastures and if he does, then I wish him luck and we will have 3.1 million reasons to offer another up and coming coach with plenty of connections to continue to build a tradition at Vanderbilt that has been lacking before the administrations current commitment.

That is a very respectable answer. Just want some of the less intelligent Vandy fans to see that the success the program has seen recently doesn't equate to the success that Tennessee is used to. Vanderbilt has done well recently for their standards but 8-4 seasons does not impress long time Vol fans. It may be a relief for us due to recent lack of success but as Vol fans its not what we want our teams goal to be. At least it shouldn't be.

I wouldn't know what it is like to have hit the pinnacle and feel like the position you are in. As a long time Vanderbilt fan, I do know how hard the climb is and has been and that it is a process that a lot of people do not understand, and expect instant gratification. It is so much harder now-a-days with the parity of college football to stay on top for a longer period of time then years past.

I'd say you are a rational Vandy fan. Those are hard to find at some sites (yes, I know we have ours too). Anyway, Franklin is doing what should have been done a long time ago and that's be competitive and be a thorn in the side of the big boys. If Northwestern, Stanford and Duke can do it, Vandy should be able to do it even though the SEC is a tougher nut to crack.

Even though you might want to see Vandy play tougher out of conference competition, the recipe for bowl eligibility success is to schedule 4 winnable out of conference games and then win 2 SEC games and become bowl eligible. They should've been doing that years ago. Not until you've upgraded the talent can you really afford to schedule a big name out of conference opponent. UT should've never scheduled Oregon. I know some people want to play the big boys, but right now UT is not competitive to beat that type of team. I know that schedules are made years in advance, but you can always buy out a game (see UNC). If they would've scheduled someone else, UT would have 5 wins and only need 1 more to become bowl eligible. At this point in their rebuilding process, that is what they should've done in my opinion.

I don't think Vandy will ever win the SEC East or the SEC. If they do, then Franklin should be given a lifetime contract. Their ceiling is 8-9 wins with the right scheduling and a bowl. If injuries are scarce and the schedule falls right, they might do better if a UT, UGA or Fla is down. However, as we've seen this year, even when those three might be down, there is South Carolina and now Mizzou to take up the slack. The SEC is as tough as it has ever been.

I don't care if Vandy beat weakened Georgia and Florida teams, they still got the wins and that is impressive. Franklin is an ass, but I think the guy has shown that he can coach and he has given that team some swagger.

watch a Vandy game and one thing you will see is new wrinkles in the Offense and Defense and half time changes , watch a Tennessee game and you will see the same ole same ole since week 1 lol

Not trying to argue your point one bit. But where does Vanderbilt go after Franklin departs? Even with its recent successes. Vanderbilt does not have the facilities, history, or fanbase to sell to a proven coach. Vanderbilt will always be Vanderbilt.

They just opened a 30 million dollar indoor. The new locker room and weight rooms opened last year. They got new turf on the field and are supposed to renovate the stadium. Franklin has proved that U can win at Vandy. It's a lot more attractive than it use to be.

Overall, a really nice post but unfortunately this is yet another example of Vandy's disadvantage and lack of viability to the best recruits...The size of your fan base will always leave you at the bottom of the pecking order in the SEC regardless of your record....The Florida bowls would not think twice about taking a 6-6 Gator team or UGA over an 8-4 Vandy team that had beaten them.

That is like saying the section 8 homes in Nashville are more attractive because they splashed fresh paint on them. At the end of the day they are still section 8 homes and Vandy is still Vandy.:eek:lol:

And Fulton High School has a bigger stadium.

He really hasn't. Beating up on a terribly weak OOC schedule then 2-4 SEC games... with wins coming against weak or down programs is a little better than before... But is far short of "winning at Vandy".

My expectation is that if Franklin gets you to a bowl game this year... he exits for a better job when the shuffling starts. There are some decent jobs open. Your weakness isn't just facilities. You have a small and not very avid fan base compared to the teams he needs to beat.

Why do you say that? The Vols had their chance against UGA and USC in both 2011 & 12. In 2011 UT started Worley against USC and as a dropped TD by Rogers from being right in the middle.

Sorry, but the results from Jones & Dooley are pretty similar. I hope it changes.

Franklin has a winning record. He's just a few games shy of being even in the SEC for the season and his career. That's a big deal at Vandy. Vols fans can go on all day about history but that won't win U any ball games. Since Franklin has been at Vandy they've been to 2 straight bowls about to have their 3rd. In that time the Vols have had 3 straight losing seasons and finished behind Vandy in SEC standings!

This. People want CBJ to be better than Dooley so badly that they "forget" several facts. CBJ right now is Dooley with 1 more significant win. That's it. Recruiting numbers don't matter till February.
